history

Castle of the Lords of Steinheim

A castle from the early Middle Ages stood on a spur on the southern flank of the castle hill at a height of about 248  m . The gentlemen of Steinheim on the one hand, but also the gentlemen of Blankenstein on the other are mentioned as owners . The castle was built around the year 800 during the Carolingian era and was first mentioned in the 12th century. Around the year 1250, it is already considered destroyed. During the land consolidation in 1973, remnants of the walls of this castle were found. A viewing platform was then built on the mountain with a view of the Murrtal, among other things.

At this point, in addition to the redesign with walls and benches, a monument with bronze plaques was erected to commemorate the castle and its history. The following is recorded there: “The castle of the Lords of Steinheim used to stand here. The local nobility was used by the Merovingians (Franconian royal family) around 500 AD. The castle itself was built around 800 AD and was one of the early medieval castles of the Carolingian era. It was a small fortified castle (Burgstall) and a waiting room. The castle was destroyed in the fighting between Staufenkaiser Friedrich II and the Pope around 1250. In the same century, the noble family in Steinheim died out. His last representatives were Albert von Steinheim and his daughter Elisabeth von Blankenstein , founder of the Marienthal monastery in Steinheim. "

Agriculture and viticulture

The top of the castle hill is used for agriculture, with its upper slopes being characterized by vineyards . These layers used to reach far down into the valleys. Today there are still large dry stone walls on the Murrtal side, which are well preserved and have to be renewed again and again - for example in 2010.

traffic

The state road  1126 runs south past the castle hill, which leads from Steinheim an der Murr in a south-easterly direction and from there via the district road  1605 to Erdmannhausen and via the L 1124 to Rielingshausen .
