The Capella is a German survey ship operated by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg. The ship is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Ministry of Transport .

history

The ship was built in 2003 under the construction number 01/1/1920 at the Fr. Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG shipyard in Berne -Motzen. The ship was hulled from May 2002 to March 2003 at the Slovenské Lodenice Komárno shipyard in Slovakia . The keel was laid on May 28, 2002, the launch on March 5, 2003. The hull was then transferred from the Danube to the Weser via the European river and canal system .

The ship was christened in Berne on October 30, 2003 . Godmother was Ingrid Stolpe, the wife of the then Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Housing, Manfred Stolpe . The ship was completed on January 5th, and commissioned on January 23rd, 2004.

Equipment and use

The ship is mainly used for surveying tasks and scientific work in the shallow waters of the German coastal waters of the North and Baltic Seas . In contrast to the other survey, wreck search and research vessels of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency , the survey ship was designed for these tasks with a draft of only 1.60 m. The hull of the ship is flat so that it can fall dry , so the ship can touch the sea floor when the water is low . The ship has an operating radius of 1,100  nautical miles and can stay at sea for up to ten days.

For surveying tasks and scientific work, the ship has appropriate scientific and technical workstations, facilities and equipment, including GPS / radio measurement technology, sonar systems and plumbing . In addition, the Capella is equipped with two flat-going survey boats and a rubber dinghy, which in turn are equipped with echo sounders .

There is space for a total of eleven people on board. The nine crew members are accommodated in nine individual chambers. A double chamber is available for two scientists or technicians traveling on board.

The home port is Rostock , the ship is mainly used on the German coastal waters of the Baltic Sea, but it is also often used on the German North Sea coast, especially in the North Frisian waters.

Technical specifications

The drive of the vessel by two eight-cylinder - four cycle - diesel engines of the manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen (type: 8 V 2000 M60) with 400  kW power , acting on a respective fixed propeller. The ship can thus reach a speed of up to 11  knots . In addition, it has a bow thruster with 150 kW output. Two generators with an apparent power of 264 kVA each are  installed for the power supply on board . The emergency and harbor generator has an apparent power of 89 kVA. The engines run on synthetic GtL fuel . The fuel is sulfur-free, which means better exhaust gas values are achieved than with conventional diesel fuels.

During the lay time in Rostock, the ship is supplied with electricity via a shore connection . The generators can be switched off in the port and the environmental pollution with exhaust gases, noise and waste heat can be reduced.

Namesake

The ship is named after the star Capella , the main star in the constellation Fuhrmann .
