The Ataquero district is located in the Carhuaz province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on December 14, 1934. It has an area of ​​46.4 km². The 2017 census counted 1574 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1792, in 2007 it was 1498. The district administration is located in the 2719  m high village of Carhuac with 299 inhabitants (as of 2017). Carhuac is 5.5 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Carhuaz .

Geographical location

The Ataquero district is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Negra in the extreme northwest of the Carhuaz province. The Río Santa flows north along the northeastern district boundary.

The Ataquero district is bordered by the Carhuaz district to the south, the Shupluy district ( Yungay province ) to the west and north, and the Mancos (Yungay province) and Tinco districts to the northeast .
