Life

Carl Müller was the son of the master belt maker and Berlin lamp manufacturer Carl August Müller and his wife Wilhelmine, née Hoffmann. He attended the Friedrichswerder trade school in Berlin and then studied natural sciences at the University of Berlin from 1876 to 1880. During this time he served from April 1878 to April 1879 in the Kaiser-Franz-Grenadier-Regiment from his military service. He was awarded the royal prize of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Berlin for his work on the award task set by the Berlin Philosophical Faculty About the plant galls in the broadest sense of the word . In 1881/82 he was private assistant to Nathanael Pringsheim and to Leopold Kny .

After his exams he was a test candidate at the Luisenstädtische Realschule in Berlin, an assistant teacher at the Friedrich-Werderschen Oberrealschule and from 1883 to 1886 a teacher at the Holy Cross School.

In 1886 he became an assistant at the Institute for Plant Physiology at the University and at the Botanical Institute at the Agricultural University in Berlin. In 1892 he completed his habilitation at the Agricultural College and until 1906 mainly taught bacteriology. In 1896 he was awarded the title of professor.

In 1895 he also received a lectureship in general and special botany at the Royal Technical University of Berlin and held microscopy courses. He also taught at the Royal Gardening School at the Wildlife Park near Potsdam (since 1903 in Dahlem), where he became head of the plant physiology department.

His scientific focus lay in the field of plant galls produced by worms (helminthology) and bacteriology as well as in the microscopic and physiological-chemical research of plant histology. With his work, Carl Müller prepared the basis for new special disciplines in applied botany, such as phytopathology and parasitology, but also the application of micro- and food chemistry in botany.

Carl Müller was a member of the German Pharmaceutical Society , became an honorary member of the Society of Natural Scientists in Berlin in 1883 and, in 1890, as the successor to Alexander Tschirch, Secretary of the German Botanical Society . In 1891 he became an honorary member of the horticultural association in Potsdam.

On January 4, 1892, Carl Alfred Ernst Müller was elected a member ( matriculation number 2936 ) of the Leopoldina .

He had been an enthusiastic gymnast since his youth and was chairman of the Berlin gymnastics association for the last years of his life .

Carl Müller was married to his wife Marie, née Boébé, since 1889. The couple had a son.
