Karl Czok

Karl Czok (born March 12, 1926 in Görlitz ; † July 18, 2013 in Leipzig ) was a German historian .

Life

The trained machine fitter Karl Czok visited the preparatory college in Leipzig (later the workers and farmers faculty ) and passed his Abitur there.

From 1951 Czok studied history at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . During his studies, he joined the SED in 1953 .

The doctorate to Dr. phil. 1957 followed in 1963 the habilitation . Czok's academic teachers included Walter Markov , Ernst Engelberg , Heinrich Sproemberg, and Hellmut Kretzschmar . At the Philosophical Faculty , which later became the History Section of Leipzig University, Czok initially worked as a lecturer , from 1966 as an associate professor and since 1969 as a full professor for the history of the local labor movement . In 1988 he was for health reasons emeritus .

Czok had been a member of the Historical Commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig since 1966 and was appointed a full member there in 1977.

In 1973, on the recommendation of Edith Ennen, he was elected a member of the Commission Internationale pour l'Histoire des Villes and, in 1974, a corresponding member of the Austrian Working Group for Urban History . His main areas of work were the older city history as well as Saxon state and regional history. For the history of the medieval city he coined the term civil struggles. Czok saw himself as a "critical Marxist".

One of Czok's students is Sieglinde Richter-Nickel , the director of the Dresden City Museum .
