Carl Gottfried Neuendorf (born December 16, 1750 in Neuendorf near Schwedt , † October 10, 1798 in Dessau ) was a German theologian , educator and philanthropist .

life and work

Carl Gottfried Neuendorf was born in Pomerania . He initially worked as a teacher and educator at the orphanage and pedagogy of the Francke Foundations in Halle (Saale) . Later he went to Halberstadt as vice rector and early preacher . Then Neuendorf was a teacher and from 1778 professor at the Philanthropinum Dessau , the most important institution in the educational direction of philanthropism . Here he was also a member of the board of directors after Johann Bernhard Basedow left the company . In 1780 he left the Philanthropinum to take up a position as country preacher in Barnim-Cunow at Werben in the Pyritz district (Pomerania). After his recall in 1784 by Prince Franz to Dessau , he appointed him director of schools in Dessau. In this role he carried out a rural school reform at over 70 schools. Neuendorf's school reform created the Hauptschule as a form of school that led to university entrance qualification, in contrast to the Philanthropinum , a tightly organized school form. The reform also included the smallest rural schools and Jewish denominational schools. He created a uniform basic education for all children, the free choice of school type, compulsory schooling , exemption from school fees , scholarship payments for those in need up to university graduation and the separation of church and school. He also advocated qualified teacher training.

For this purpose, the princely master builder Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff created, in addition to the palace buildings in Wörlitz , Luisium and Georgium , also schools for rural communities, which have been preserved in Griesen and Riesigk .

Carl Gottfried Neuendorf was also the head of the Dessau secondary school, which, founded in 1785, became the most important school location in Anhalt-Dessau . In the same year, Prince Franz made the Palais des Prince Moritz available to the school.

When Neuendorf died in 1798, he was buried on the new burial ground in Dessau . His successor as head of the secondary school and director of the school system was Gerhard Vieth .

“The country owes the better establishment of schools to him, over which he watched with tireless care to the end. Conscientious loyalty to office, unchangeable righteousness, wise zeal for everything that seemed to be of benefit to him were the soul of his actions. "
