Carlone (artist family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Carlone are a widespread family in Central Europe with many important personalities, originally from the area between Lake Como and Lake Lugano . There they are referred to as "Artisti dei laghi", to whom a whole series of art books are dedicated, with the subtitle "Itinerari europei", European migrant workers or migrant artists.

It can be divided into the following branches:

1. The artist family Carlone from the village of Scaria (today: Lanzo d'Intelvi ) between Lake Como and Lake Lugano has produced important artists - architects and masons , plasterers and frescoes - and panel painters - in the Baroque and Rococo ages.

Mostly it was traveling artists who spent the winter in their hometown. Some branches of the family also settled in Austria for generations, mainly in Styria .

The following artists can be assigned to the Austro-Styrian branch of this family:

2. The Carlone family of artists from the village of Rovio (also located between Lake Como and Lake Lugano) also produced important artists in the Baroque and Rococo periods.

3. Side branches of the Styrian part of the Carlone family from Scaria with the Germanized name "Karlon" were theologians and politicians; above all Prelate Alois Karlon , who contributed significantly to the re-establishment of the Seckau Abbey and the creation of a Catholic press in Styria.
