Carlone (artist family)
The Carlone are a widespread family in Central Europe with many important personalities, originally from the area between Lake Como and Lake Lugano . There they are referred to as "Artisti dei laghi", to whom a whole series of art books are dedicated, with the subtitle "Itinerari europei", European migrant workers or migrant artists.
It can be divided into the following branches:
1. The artist family Carlone from the village of Scaria (today: Lanzo d'Intelvi ) between Lake Como and Lake Lugano has produced important artists - architects and masons , plasterers and frescoes - and panel painters - in the Baroque and Rococo ages.
Mostly it was traveling artists who spent the winter in their hometown. Some branches of the family also settled in Austria for generations, mainly in Styria .
The following artists can be assigned to the Austro-Styrian branch of this family:
- Antonio Carlone (1622–1664), master mason in Vienna.
- Archangelo Carlone (around 1560–1630), master builder in Graz .
- Bartolomeo Carlone (probably † 1717) plasterer and sculptor in St. Florian Monastery , Passau , Schlierbach Monastery , Spital am Pyhrn, Linz ad Donau, Kefermarkt, Mauthausen.
- Carlo Carlone (1686–1775), painter in Weingarten, Brühl near Cologne ( Augustusburg Palace ), Vienna ( Kaun-Kinsky Palace , Upper Belvedere ), Ansbach, Großsiegharts, Lambach, Linz on the Danube, Ludwigsburg, Heimsheim, Einsiedeln, Prague, Breslau .
- Carlo Antonio Carlone (1635–1708), master builder in Passau , Pöllau, Admont , St. Florian , Schlierbach , Wels-Bad Wimsbach, Baumgartenberg, Eisenstadt, Freistadt, Garsten , Kremsmünster , Reichersberg , Ried id Riedmark, Rohrbach, Ansfelden, Vienna ( Schottenkirche , Church of the nine angel choirs )
- Carlo Martino Carlone (1616–1667), master builder in Vienna ( Hofburg Leopoldine wing ), Eisenstadt .
- Diego Francesco Carlone (1674–1750), plasterer in St. Florian, Kremsmünster, Lambach, Linz, Salzburg, Weingarten, Ansbach, Ludwigsburg, Passau, Amberg, Einsiedeln.
- Domenico Carlone (1615–1679), master builder in Vienna (Hofburg Leopoldine wing), Petronell Palace .
- Domenico Antonio Carlone plasterer in Amberg, Linz, St. Florian
- Giovanni Battista (Johann Baptist) Carlone († around 1707), plasterer, sculptor and master builder in Passau , Garsten, Christkindl , Reichersberg, Ried id Riedmark, Schlierbach, Spital am Pyhrnpass, Vöcklabruck, Straubing, Vilshofen ad Donau, parish churches, Waldsassen, Amberg , Parish Church of St. Johannes in Dingolfing
- Josef Carlone (1678–1739), master mason in Graz, Tobelbad, St. Jakob im Freiland .
- Joachim Carlone (probably 1650–1714), master bricklayer in Graz, Pöllau, Rottenmann, Admont.
- Peter Carlone Baumeister in Leoben, Admont, Evers, Mautern. He built between 1600 and 1613.
- Peter Franz Carlone ( Pietro Francesco Carlone ; † 1680 or 1681), master builder in Leoben, St. Georgen am Längsee, St. Kathrein ad Laming, Seckau , Gurk, Schlierbach, Garsten, Linz, Passau.
- Pietro Carlone , the oldest Styrian Carlone; built fortifications at Kreuz in Croatia in 1556.
- Sebastian Carlone the Elder (* before 1570, † after 1612), sculptor and architect in Graz and Seckau.
- Sebastian Carlone the Younger , architect in Vienna ( Mariahilfer Church )
- Silvestro Carlone , the Viennese (1610–1669 / 1671), city architect in Vienna ( Schottenkirche , St. Michael).
- New Year's Eve Carlone , the Prague man (* 1708 or 1709), master builder in Prague (Strahow Monastery), Mühlhausen in Bohemia.
2. The Carlone family of artists from the village of Rovio (also located between Lake Como and Lake Lugano) also produced important artists in the Baroque and Rococo periods.

3. Side branches of the Styrian part of the Carlone family from Scaria with the Germanized name "Karlon" were theologians and politicians; above all Prelate Alois Karlon , who contributed significantly to the re-establishment of the Seckau Abbey and the creation of a Catholic press in Styria.
