Carlyle is a city and administrative seat of Clinton County in the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . The city is located in the eastern part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area called Metro-East around the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri . In 2000 Carlyle had 3406 inhabitants.

Carlyle is located on Carlyle Lake , the largest reservoir in Illinois.

General Dean Suspension Bridge

Carlyle is 38 ° 36'46 "north latitude and 89 ° 22'15" west longitude. The city extends over 7.8 km², which consists exclusively of land.

Carlyle is located on the southern edge of Carlyle Lake , a 105.2 km² reservoir of the Kaskaskia River .

Below the lake is the General Dean Suspension Bridge , a suspension bridge and the only one of its kind in Illinois.

US Highway 50 runs through Carlyle and crosses the Kaskaskia River to the east of the city. Illinois State Route 127 crosses in downtown Carlyle .

After St. Louis in Missouri , it is 84.5 km to the west, Illinois' capital Springfield is located 148 km to the north.

history

Carlyle was founded in 1818 by Charles W. Slade and named after his grandmother's family name. Slade went to great lengths to make Carlyle the capital of Illinois, but lost that battle to Vandalia in 1819 . Clinton County was formed in 1824 and Carlyle was selected as its administrative seat in 1825 . Both were again on the initiative of Charles W. Slade .

Today, Carlyle is mainly a center of attraction for tourism thanks to Carlyle Lake .

Demographic data

In the 2000 census, the population was 3406. These were distributed to 1,370 households in 902 families. The population density was 439.8 / km². There were 1464 buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 189.0 / km².

The population in 2000 was 95.24% white , 3.41% African American , 0.23% American Indian , 0.50% Asian, and 0.15% other. 0.12% said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.82% of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

23.3% were under 18 years of age, 9.8% between 18 and 24, 24.4% between 25 and 44, 21.3% between 45 and 64 and 21.3% 65 and older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 88.8 men, for those over 18 years of age 84.4.

The median income per household was $ 36,660 and the median family income was $ 48,056. The average income for men was $ 35,977 and that for women was $ 22,463. The per capita income was $ 18,744. Around 5.4% of families and 6.7% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
