Carsten Stormer

Carsten Stormer , (born 1973 in Pinneberg ) is a German journalist , author , photographer and filmmaker . His focus is on foreign, crisis and war reporting. He lives in Manila .

Life

Carsten Stormer completed an apprenticeship as a forwarding agent and later studied journalism in Bremen and at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Chennai (India). As he reports in his first book Das Leben ist ein Wildes Tier (2011), he actually wanted to become a captain, “which he rejected after six weeks as a boat boy because life on deck seemed too monotonous to him. He was also not a forwarding agent. He became a world traveler and a barman. ”The encounter with two girls seriously injured by an old land mine as a 24-year-old (1997) in Cambodia led him to opt for a career as a war correspondent. He completed his first internships as a journalist at the Phnom Penh Post in Cambodia and at the Myanmar Times.

He is married and has a son who was born in 2014. Since 2008 he has been living as an Asia correspondent with his family in Manila.

From 2004 Carsten Stormer reported from crisis areas in Darfur , Somalia , Congo , Afghanistan , Iraq , Uganda and East Timor . Since 2006 he has been a member of the Zeitenspiegel reporter community in Weinstadt -Endersbach. Since 2012 he has mainly reported on the war situation in Syria and Iraq for German and international news channels and magazines. In an interview with the industry portal meedia.de he spoke openly about a post-traumatic stress disorder as part of his everyday life as a war reporter from 2013, which resulted from his experiences in Syria and, among other things, a near-kidnapping on the way to Zabadani . He writes regularly for Der Spiegel , GEO , Focus , Stern , Cicero , Playboy , NZZ am Sonntag and other media. He has processed his experiences in Syria in several books, most recently in Die Schatten des Morgenlandes (2017). In recent years, his focus has shifted from writing to television reporting.
