It has been published since autumn 2008 and - until his death - was edited by Robin Meyer-Lucht and also by Wolfgang Michal , Matthias Schwenk and Christoph Kappes . From 2012 the blog was continued by Tatjana Brode , Wolfgang Michal and Leonard Novy . In September 2014 Wolfgang Michal resigned as editor. In addition to Brode and Novy, Christian Neuner-Duttenhofer , Stefan Heidenreich and Lukas Franke now belong to the group of four editors and also form the editorial team.

The website primarily offers analytical texts, background reports, opinion pieces and researched stories. The thematic focal points are the relationships between the Internet and the public , political communication, media economics , political economics , media politics and online election campaigns . On December 6, 2010, Meyer-Lucht wrote that Carta needed a "new concept and financing round" [4] and handed over operational management to the editors Matthias Schwenk and Wolfgang Michal and to Christoph Kappes, who had been a regular author since the beginning of 2010, and appointed Christoph Kappes as a new co-editor.

history

In March and May 2011, respectively, the two editors Matthias Schwenk and Christoph Kappes resigned. In June 2011 Meyer-Lucht announced a temporary “summer break” for financial reasons and a realignment of the platform for the time thereafter. In the context of the death of Robin Meyer-Luchts in September 2011, it was said that the project lacked a financial perspective. On the other hand, there was talk of disagreements between the parties involved.

On January 26, 2012 it was announced that Carta would be continued under the direction of Robin Meyer-Lucht's wife Tatjana Brode and Wolfgang Michal.

On May 3, 2012, another reform of the sponsorship, publishing and editing was announced. Carta has been operated since March 2012 by a newly founded entrepreneurial company "Carta UG", whose shareholders are Tatjana Brode and Wolfgang Michal. The editors are now Tatjana Brode, Wolfgang Michal and Leonard Novy. There is also a scientific advisory board to which Gesine Schwan , Wolfgang R. Langenbucher , Otfried Jarren , Juli Zeh , Frank A. Meyer , Lutz Hachmeister , Armin Berger and Frank Westphal belong. Carta has worked with the Institute for Media and Communication Policy since then . Vera Bunse was the editor . Since then, there has been a collaboration with Zeit Online to market ads .

Also in May 2012, the non-profit development association Carta eV was founded, which carries the blog and also "promotes discourses that go beyond current events and deal analytically with changes in society and public communication". A Robin Meyer Lucht grant is to be awarded to young journalists every year.

In September 2014 the platform was restructured, as a result of which Wolfgang Michal resigned as editor-in-chief and editor. Christian Stahl took his place. It said: "Behind the scenes there was disagreement about organization and self-image" of the blog. The dispute over the direction and direction of the online magazine was partly public.

Award

In June 2009 Carta received the Grimme Online Award in the Information category. The jury stated that Carta offered "professional and original online journalism that does not come from a house of the old media."

In June 2011 Carta received a LeadAward as “one of the 12 best blogs of the past year”.

In September 2016, Carta was nominated for the LeadAward in the main online category, "Independent of the Year", and won it at the award ceremony on October 10, 2016.
