Castile and León ( Spanish Castilla y León ) is a Spanish autonomous community . The seat of government is Valladolid .

Geography and structure

Castile and León includes the North Meseta , a plateau between 600 and 800  m in height, bordered by mountain ranges in north-west central Spain, which is drained by the Duero .

The western part with the provinces of León , Zamora and Salamanca forms the historical landscape of León ; the central and eastern part known as Old Castile is part of the historical Castile landscape .

With 94,223 km² of land area, the autonomous region is slightly larger than neighboring Portugal. It thus covers 18.6% of the Spanish land mass, but with a population density of 27 inh. / Km² (Portugal: 115.1 in. / Km²) represents only 5.7% of the population of Spain.

In comparison with the GDP of the EU in terms of purchasing power standards, the region achieved an index of 84 (EU-28: 100) (2015). In 2017 the unemployment rate was 14.1%.

With a score of 0.888, Castile and León ranks 7th among the 17 autonomous communities in Spain in the Human Development Index .
