Chandeen [ ˌʃænˈdiːn ] is a music project from Frankfurt am Main that was founded in 1990 and became popular in the dark wave environment in the first half of the 1990s . The band itself called their style "Electronic Poetry" at the time.

From the mid-1990s, the style changed as a result of a line-up, the band has since produced more pop music- oriented works with influences from rock and trip-hop .

history

founding

Chandeen was founded in 1990 by Harald Löwy and Oliver Henkel. However, both musicians met for their first experiments in the winter of 1989, so that there are different information about the date of Chandeen's creation. In 1991 the singer Aline Akbari joined the project as a further member, followed only one year later by the second singer Antje Schulz.

Early works

After two cassette releases , Oliver Rösch, label boss of Hyperium Records , became aware of Chandeen and offered the project a record deal. Shortly before Chandeen signed the contract, Aline Akbari left the project and was replaced by Catrin Mallon in the spring of 1993. In this line-up, Chandeen recorded the first two albums Shaded by the Leaves and Jutland . Harald Löwy and Oliver Henkel withdrew to Jutland for six weeks to make the rough recordings of Jutland .

Split

In the course of the studio work on Jutland , internal project differences became noticeable, which culminated in late 1994 with the departure of Catrin Mallon and Oliver Henkel. Both musicians then formed the Edera project , which disappeared after the release of the first and only album Ambiguous (1996).

In the meantime, rumors of liquidation began to circulate, but these were not confirmed by the remaining part of Chandeen. Despite other releases that made Chandeen more popular in the years that followed, Jutland would remain the most significant album. It is considered the most atmospheric work by the band.

We recorded Jutland completely in Denmark in a six-week session. We were secluded in a house by the sea and created our very own album. Stylistically, this was our most important time. "

- Harald Löwy, 2002

Change of style

While Jutland conquered the market, the EP Light Within Time was released in 1995 . Then the new singer Stephanie Härich came on for the first time, who joined Chandeen in the spring of 1995 and took the place of Catrin Mallon. Stephanie Härich was previously integrated into Incept Date , a side project by Harald Löwy, where she contributed the background vocals for the album Archipelago (1994). The titles of the Light Within Time- EP frightened many fans because of their unusual sounds, Chandeen presented rather unobtrusive pop songs with folkloristic features instead of the usual dark and romantic atmosphere .

way to success

The following works The Waking Dream (1996), Spacerider - Love at First Sight (1998) and Bikes and Pyramids (2002) consistently continued the new path, from the end of the 1990s more and more contemporary trip-hop , drum and bass and rock elements. In the meantime, Chandeen separated from their label Hyperium Records and switched to Synthetic Symphony , a sub-label of SPV Recordings .

At the end of 1998, the recordings of the Skywalking video clip began , which after its completion ran on MTV and VIVA in rotation and was nominated in six categories for the German Video Music Award. Then Chandeen were guests on NBC-Giga .

Dissolution and a new beginning

In order to rule out further compromises and to be able to operate better independently of large record companies, Harald Löwy founded his own label Kalinkaland in 2001 . The Chandeen works have been published there since 2002.

A best-of collection and several maxis completed Chandeen's previous work, before the last album, Echoes, was released in 2003 . This work is much calmer and more sedate than its predecessors and represents a return to the roots of the band. Antje Buchheiser, singer from Stoa , acted as the second voice for the title song Echoes . After Stephanie Härich also stopped working in 2002, Antje Schulz and Harald Löwy separated two years later.

After a long break, Löwy reactivated the project and released the new album Teenage Poetry on Kalinkaland on March 28, 2008 . For this work he looked for a new voice: Julia Beyer. There was also another permanent member of the band, Mike Brown, who died on March 20, 2012.

In 2011 the album Blood Red Skies was released , also with Julia Beyer as singer, followed by Forever And Ever (November 2014).

On February 28, 2020, the tenth studio album Mercury Retrograde was released. In addition to Julia Beyer, Löwy worked on this album with the English singer Holly Henderson, the French songwriter Kitty and the 16-year-old guest singer Odile. The video for the second single Ocean Mind was presented by the American trade and industry magazine Billboard .

Origin of name

Chandeen was the name of the iguana of a friend Harald Löwys. According to Löwy, this name comes from an Indian language. There is no corresponding translation into German that fully captures the meaning of the word. Chandeen is considered a name with a religious background. It is used to describe impressions or events that bring a particular person closer to the “source of life” or the “meaning of existence”. This includes déjà vu experiences. The name Löwy and Henkel therefore seemed appropriate for the spiritual and spherical orientation of the band at the time of the formation.
