Charles Burton (wrestler)
Charles Burton (born October 9, 1973 in Ontario ) is a retired American wrestler . He finished 5th in the free style middleweight division at the 2000 Sydney Olympics .
Career
Charles Burton began wrestling in 1987 while he was in high school. He specialized in the free style. He lived in the state of Nebraska at the time and took part in three youth championships in that state. In 1989 he finished 6th, in 1990 he was runner-up and in 1991 champion of this state. He later attended college in Boise , where he was trained by Mike Davies.
In 1996 he had his next major success when he finished 2nd at the NCAA (NCAA = American Student Sports Association) free style welterweight championships behind Daryl Weber and Mark Branch. In 1997 he was the American student champion of the AAU (AAU = American Athletes Union) in the welterweight division. He was then used by this association at the Pan American Championships in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and came there in welterweight behind Leonardo Diaz from Cuba a . Manuel Garcia Cardones from Puerto Rico in 3rd place.
In the meantime he also belonged to the New York AC (Athletes Club). He also worked as an assistant trainer at Iowa State University from 1996/97 and from 1998 to 2001 at Indiana State University. Since 2002 he has been a trainer at Nebraska State University.
His wrestling career reached its absolute climax in 2000. In that year he, trained by Duane Goldmann, was runner-up at the US middleweight championship behind former world champion Leslie Gutches . In the subsequent Olympic qualification (Trials) he managed the surprise by defeating Leslie Gutches in three encounters and thus gaining the right to start at the Olympic Games in Sydney . In Sydney he won the middleweight division over Alione Diouf from Senegal , Gregory Martinetti from Switzerland and Yang Hyung-mo from South Korea and lost to Mogamed Ibragimov from Macedonia and thus took an excellent 5th place.
In 2000 he also started at the Pan American Championships in Cali , Colombia . He came in second behind Matthew Aaron White Rich from Puerto Rico, but ahead of Justin Abdou from Canada and Ricardo Garcia from Mexico .
In the further course of his career he finished in 2001 at the US Middleweight Championships behind Cael Sanderson again a 2nd place. But he could no longer qualify for further international championships.
