Charles Morris, Baron Morris of Grasmere

Charles Richard Morris, Baron Morris of Grasmere (born January 25, 1898 in Hildenborough , Kent , England - † May 30, 1990 ) was a British philosopher , university professor and politician who was Vice Chancellor of the University of Leeds between 1948 and 1962 and in 1967 as Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .

Life

University professor, undersecretary and school principal

Morris joined the British Army in 1914 after attending school in Tonbridge at the beginning of World War I and took part in battles and combat missions in France and Belgium until the end of the war . Most recently he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was promoted to lieutenant . After the war, he began studying at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge , which he in 1921 with a Bachelor of Arts graduated (BA).

He then served from 1922 to 1943 as a Fellow and Tutor of philosophy at Balliol College of Oxford University worked next completed his postgraduate studies at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, which he in 1924 with a Master of Arts finished (MA). Morris, who was inspired in his teachings by Sandie Lindsay, 1st Baron Lindsay of Birker , was involved in refugee aid and supported standpoints against the appeasement policy .

In addition to his teaching activities at Balliol College, Morris worked in the Ministry of Supply between 1939 and 1942 during the Second World War , before he was Undersecretary in the Ministry of Production from 1942 to 1943 . He then became principal of the King Edward VII School in Birmingham in 1943 and held this position until 1948.

Leeds University Vice Chancellor, House of Lords and Honors

In 1948, Morris succeeded the chemist Bernard Mouat Jones as Vice Chancellor of the University of Leeds and held this position until he was replaced by the diplomat Roger Bentham Stevens in 1963. For his services, he was first promoted to a Knight Bachelor in 1953 and from then on carried the suffix "Sir" . Morris, who also became Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1963 , was also an Honorary Doctor of Law (Hon. LL.D.) from Lancaster University , University of Aberdeen , Victoria University of Manchester , the University of Hull , the University of Malta and the University of Leeds. He also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Technology (Hon. D.Tech.) From the University of Bradford and an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from the University of Sydney .

By letters patent dated January 17, 1967, Morris was raised to the nobility under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a life peer with the title Baron Morris of Grasmere , of Grasmere in the County of Westmorland . His introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords took place on January 25, 1967 by Barbara Wootton, Baroness Wootton of Abinger and John Fulton, Baron Fulton . He was a member of the House of Lords until his death.
