Christian Dierstein

Christian Dierstein (* 1965 ) is a German musician , chamber musician and drummer .

Life

Dierstein studied music with Bernhard Wulff in Freiburg , with Gaston Sylvestre in Paris and with Wassilios Papadopulus in Mannheim . Dierstein was a scholarship holder of the German Study Foundation and the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart .

Dierstein has been the drummer for ensemble recherche since 1988 . From 1994 he also formed the chamber music trio trio accanto with Yukiko Sugawara and Marcus Weiss . In 2012 Yukiko Sugawara left the trio; her successor is Nicolas Hodges .

Dierstein gave solo concerts, including in the Rising Stars series , with which he appeared in the Cologne Philharmonic , the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam .

In 2001 he appeared as a soloist at the International Beethoven Festival in Bonn . He has also performed at the Vienna Festival , at the Munich Biennale, at the Donaueschingen Festival and the Biennale of Venice on. In 2005 Dierstein played works by Morton Feldman and Salvatore Sciarrino together with the Freiburg Baroque Consort in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic . He played the composition Refrain by Karlheinz Stockhausen in the New Music studio of Westdeutscher Rundfunk .

In the Donaueschingen Festival 2007 Dierstein brought the ensemble recherche works of contemporary music to premiere . The world premieres were recorded by the SWR .

As a soloist and chamber musician, Dierstein took part in radio and CD recordings. He played works by Wolfgang Rihm and Dieter Schnebel , among others . He also interpreted works by Claude Vivier . Together with the conductor Lothar Zagrosek , he recorded the works Air and Interieur I by Helmut Lachenmann .

Dierstein also took part in several world premieres of compositions by Manos Tsangaris . In 1998 Dierstein played the world premiere of Drei Orte with the trio accanto at the MusikBiennale Berlin and in 2000 the world premiere of Initium in Rümlingen as a soloist . In 2007 Dierstein played the world premiere of Beat Boxer , a composition for solo drums and speaker by Manfred Stahnke .

Dierstein also wrote his own compositions for radio plays and theater productions .

Since 2001 he has been professor for percussion and new chamber music at the University of Music in Basel . The focus of his artistic occupation as a musician is dealing with non-European music and free improvisation. Dierstein is head of the research project The New Drums , which is being carried out together with the Electronic Studio Basel and the Bärenreiter-Verlag .

Christian Dierstein has been a lecturer at the International Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt since 2008 .
