Christian Gueintz

Christian Gueintz (born October 13, 1592 in Kohlo near Guben ; † April 3, 1650 in Halle / Saale ) was a teacher , grammarian and hymn poet of the Baroque period .

Life

Gueintz was the son of a Protestant pastor and attended schools in Cottbus , Guben , Crossen on the Oder (1608-1609), Sorau (1609-1612), Bautzen (1612) and Stettin (1613). At the age of 23, Gueintz enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on June 23, 1615 . There he acquired the master's degree the following year, on September 24, 1616. In 1617 he received a teaching post for rhetoric, logic, physics, ethics and politics and was appointed adjunct of the philosophical faculty.

When Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen was looking for suitable teachers for the school reforms he was promoting in 1618, Christian Gueintz was recommended to him by Wolfgang Ratke . From June 3, 1619 Gueintz taught Latin and Greek in Koethen . He also translated Ratke's Grammatica universalis into Greek (Köthen 1619) and wrote a Greek language exercise in German and Greek (Köthen 1620).

On September 14, 1621, he married Catharina Bernd, a daughter of the mayor Johann Brand, who died in 1616, in Köthen. It was not until 1622 that Gueintz returned to Wittenberg and studied law. Immediately after graduation, he was elected as a lawyer in the Wittenberg Consistory . On April 4, 1627, Gueintz accepted the appointment as rector of the grammar school in Halle and became the educator of Gebhard von Alvensleben , David Schirmer , Erhard Weigel and Philipp von Zesen, among others . In 1630, however, he got into disputes over competence with the Halle music director Samuel Scheidt , which led to the impeachment of this famous composer.

In 1641, Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen accepted Gueintz into the Fruitful Society . The prince gave him the company name of the organizer and the motto " Everyone in his place" . The mechoacana (possibly Ipomea jalapa Coxe ?) Was intended as an emblem. Gueintz's entry can be found in the Koethener society book under the number 361. The rhyme law is also recorded here, which he wrote as thanks for his inclusion:

Mechoacana knows at its

Gueintz ties in directly to the didactics of Wolfgang Ratke , with whom he had worked closely in the Köthen school reform, but his anomalous view of language contradicted the analogists Justus Georg Schottelius and Georg Philipp Harsdörffer .
