Christian Kneisel (born August 24, 1953 in Berlin ), known by his stage name Xirc le Cinx , is a German composer , musicologist , teacher , director , director , curator and visual artist .

Education

From 1973 to 1980 Kneisel studied musicology, ethnomusicology and theater studies at the Free University of Berlin (FU) with a master's degree and composition with Heinz Lau , Thomas Kessler , Boris Blacher , Jolyon Brettingham Smith and Witold Szalonek . He also studied communication sciences and cybernetics at the Technical University of Berlin and also completed various traineeships and assistants in radio and music studios . From 2007 to 2010 he also studied "solution-oriented psychology" with a diploma .

Artistic work

Kneisel was a course instructor for electroacoustic music from 1973 to 1982 , a. a. as part of the event series "Music Education & Experiment" as well as various art and music educational model experiments and also worked parallel to his studies and his professional activities from 1977 to 1996 as a teacher at various Berlin schools. From 1983 to 1987, together with Michael Muschner, he ran the music studio "Musiklabor", which is supported by the city of Berlin and serves to promote young artists. Kneisel also worked as a lecturer in cultural management at the Free University of Berlin (1992–1995) and as a lecturer in cultural management at the BBW Academy Berlin-Brandenburg (1996–1999).

In 1988 he became scientific director of the music department at the Berlin Academy of the Arts and worked as such until 2001. Here he looked after the members of the academy, was responsible for the conception and organization of public events and also for exhibitions and installations as part of large interdisciplinary projects. His tasks included various advisory and expert activities, jury , supervisory and advisory board work, establishment and maintenance of cooperation with domestic and foreign cultural institutions as well as the issuing of various publications. In 1994 he also took over the artistic direction of the Künstlerhof Buch in northern Berlin, which is supported by the Academy. In 1989 he founded "Academy", the CD label for contemporary music of the Akademie der Künste, which he directed until 2003. In 1996 he founded another CD label of the academy, "The Listening Room", which until 2003 published sound carriers in the genres of electroacoustic music, radio art, feature, literature and "cabaret music of the 1920s".

From 2001 to 2014 Kneisel was the artistic director of the Brandenburger Theater in Brandenburg an der Havel , and from 2001 to 2011 also managing director of the Brandenburger Theater GmbH there. From 2003 to 2014 he was also the director of the Kunsthalle Brennabor , where he has been a curator since it reopened in 2016. In 2017 and 2018, Kneisel supervised artists living in Berlin in EU-funded projects and curated their exhibitions.

Kneisel has been a freelance composer, visual artist and curator since 2014.

Concert activity and publications

From 1970 to 1988 Kneisel was a saxophonist , clarinetist and synthesizer player in various rock groups and jazz ensembles, playing with " Agitation Free ", members of " Tangerine Dream ", " Ash Ra Tempel ", "Bleibtreu", " Other Voices " , among others. , " Interzone ", " 1st Futurological Congress ", Frieder Butzmann , Gustl Lütjens , Harald Grosskopf , Manne Opitz, Chris Evans , Bruno Ferrari, Else Nabu , Carlo Karges and George Kranz . He completed concerts and tours in Germany, Austria, Poland, Romania, the Netherlands and the GDR. He was also a member or guest of various contemporary music ensembles and performed numerous concerts as a composer and performer (including at the “ Warsaw Autumn ”, New Music Bucharest, “ Pro musica nova ”, “Unheard Music” Berlin and concerts in France, Holland and the GDR).

He often published his compositions under pseudonyms , including compositions for new music . Among other things, Jeffrey Burns performed his works for piano solo between 1993 and 2002 , and the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra premiered eight orchestral works in 2015. With Carlo Karges he composed the pieces for Else Nabu's solo LP in 1982.

As a composer he was involved in the production of several music theater works, including a. he wrote music for the music theater "Reineke Fuchs" for the productions "Feuerreiter" (1985), "Atta Troll" (1986) and "Caution Fire" (1988). He composed numerous theater music for various Berlin theaters as well as for the Brandenburg theater.

He also took on directorial work (contemporary music theater, drama, performance), designed room and video installations and carried them out, exhibited photographic and visual art works and created sound art installations in public spaces and galleries.

Kneisel was also Germany correspondent for the US music magazine "Synapse - electronic & computer music magazine" (1976–1980), freelance author and reviewer of music education and musicological magazines, co-author of book and catalog projects - u. a. "Rock in the 70s", "X-Positions" (1994), " Sonambiente " (1996), "Z 2000" - as well as author of various radio features, etc. a. "Rock Music in the GDR", "Electronic Music in School", "Computer and Composition" (1979–1985).

Advisory activities

Since 1983, Kneisel has been a member of various juries, advisory boards, and commissions (including music funding from the city of Berlin and the state of Brandenburg, DAAD artist program , Berliner Festwochen , German Music Council ). From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the team of curators and consultants at the Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH. In 1990 he was co-founder and chairman of the Berlin Society for New Music and the umbrella organization “ Initiative Neue Musik Berlin ”.
