Christina von Bülow (* 1962 ) is a Danish jazz musician ( alto saxophone , flute ).

Live and act

Bülow came to jazz through her father, the jazz guitarist Fritz von Bülow . As a teenager, she first learned to play the flute before turning to the alto saxophone, which became her main instrument. Between 1986 and 1990 she studied at the Rytmisk Conservatory of Music . She also took private lessons with Stan Getz and attended clinics with Lee Konitz .

Since 1993 she has been leading her own trio (with guitarist Jacob Fischer and bassist Jens Skou Olsen) which recorded her first album in 1994 with Jan Allan . She also leads a quartet with pianist Ben Besiakov , which has often performed with Bernt Rosengren . In 2007 she recorded the album My Little Brown Book with Horace Parlan and Jesper Lundgaard . With Fredrik Lundin she leads the quintet Silhouette and with the pianist Søren Kristiansen she plays in the group Time Out , but also in a duo and trio. She has also performed with Rune Gustafsson , Georg Riedel , Herlin Riley , Allan Botschinsky , Putte Wickman , Doug Raney , Marilyn Mazur , Mikkel Nordsø and the DR Big Band . She can also be heard on recordings by Erling Kroner , Jan Kaspersen , Silvana Malta, Thulla , Steen Rasmussen and Niels Jørgen Steen. The discographer Tom Lord recorded 24 Bülow recordings between 1991 and 2014.

Prizes and awards

Christina von Bülow was first honored in 1994 with the JASA Prize of the Danish Jazz Critics. In 2002 she received the Ben Webster Prize , which was followed by the Jazz Prize of the Copenhagen Palæ Bar in 2009 and the Bent Jædig Prize in 2013. In 2014 she was recorded in Kraks Blå Bog .

She was nominated for a Danish Music Award for her albums West of the Moon (2001) and A Primera Vez (2004) .
