Erling Kroner (* 16th April 1943 in Copenhagen , † 2. March 2011 ) was a Danish jazz - trombone and - Composer .

Live and act

Erling Kroner began his music career in 1959 in various Copenhagen Dixieland jazz bands . In 1961 he toured Germany with the Danish Trad Band Dixieland Stompers and again in 1962 with Jack Duff's Jazztet and Ken Sims' Vintage Jazz Band .

In the mid-1960s he turned to the European jazz avant-garde and played with John Tchicai and Roswell Rudd . In 1966/67 he toured Denmark with the Trad formation Melvis & his Gentlemen ; in the fall of 1967 he founded his first quintet. He performed with Philly Joe Jones and Phil Woods ; In 1969 he won a fellowship from the Down Beat Hall of Fame Scholarship and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston . During this time he worked with George Russell's Sextet ( Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature ); In 1969/70 he worked with his Erling Kroner Tentet in Boston.

After his return to Denmark in 1970, the Erling Kroner Quintet released the first album, Music Book , which he dedicated to the recently deceased booker Ervin . In 1971 he played for the first time in the Danish Radio Big Band . During this time he performed every Monday with his Tentett ( Erling Kroner Folk Dance Organization ) at the Jazzhus Montmartre club in St. Regnegade. After leaving the Radio Big Band in 1973, he studied again in Berklee with Herb Pomeroy (1973/74). In 1976 he directed the NDR Big Band in Hamburg for a program of Mingus compositions, which he also arranged; Soloists were u. a. Bobby Jones and Manfred Schoof .

In 1977 he recorded his second album The Forgotten Art and in 1978 he worked with the Creme Fraiche Big Band and again with the Danish Radio Big Band under the direction of Thad Jones . In 1979 he was awarded the Ben Webster Prize, reformed his tentet and worked as artistic director of the Leif Johansson Orchestra . He also worked with the band White Orange the Swedish drummer Lars Beijbom , which also Tim Hagans and from Uruguay native Hector Finito Bingert played. In 1979 he received the Ben Webster Prize .

From 1980 to 1991 Kroner was a member of Ernie Wilkins ' Almost Big Band . In 1982 he recorded his third album Entre Dos Cielos , toured with Ernie Wilkins, with whom he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival . Kroner visited first time this year Argentina to where the tango music to study, came there with his Tango de oscuridad program and played in a quintet with the bandoneon player Julio Oscar Pane . After his return to Denmark in 1984 he worked as a freelance soloist, composer and arranger with various European radio big bands; so he stepped u. a. at the Zagreb Jazz Fair with the Festival All Stars from Benny Bailey , Ernie Wilkins, Karlheinz Miklin and John Lewis .

In 1985 Kroner appeared again in Argentina at the MarDel Jazz Festival , where he worked as a guest soloist in Dino Saluzzi's sextet. At the Jazz Festival in Ljubljana he played his own compositions with the big band RTV-Ljubljana ; Guest soloist was Woody Shaw. Kroner founded the New Music Orchestra , which played compositions by young Danish composers and performed at the Jazzhus Montmartre . With a sextet, which Horace Parlan also belonged to, he recorded the album Shining Like a Tear in a sextet line-up , which however was never released. He performed again with his quintet in Zagreb and at the Belgrade Jazz Festival . In 1984/87 Kroner wrote tango-inspired music for the Danish Radio Light Symphony Orchestra , and worked again with the Radio Big Band for a program with his own and Mingus and Monk compositions. In 1986 he worked again in Argentina with Dino Saluzzi and a quintet with the pianist Horacio Larumbe . In Denmark he worked with the Khan Jamal Quintet with Sunny Murray and recorded his fourth album From the Dark Side . In 1988 he played at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival with the Lee Konitz -Nonett. In 1989, Kroner brought Herb Pomeroy to the Copenhagen Jazz Festival ; in this band played u. a. Bob Rockwell , Jeff Davis and Lars Beijbom . His Dark Side Orchestra premiered at this festival . He then led the Danish Radio Big Band with Jimmy Knepper as a guest soloist in a program with Mingus compositions.

In 1990 Kroner appeared again in Argentina at the tenth MarDel Jazz Festival in Buenos Aires, which was dedicated to his music, wrote arrangements for the NDR Big Band for a Monk project with Stan Tracey as a soloist; In 1992, Kroner worked again for NDR with Gustavo Toker as a soloist in a Tango Nuevo program with compositions by Astor Piazzolla and Kroner.

1992 recorded an album with the trumpeter and flugelhornist Per Ringkjøbing , played with Lee Konitz and the Jazzpar All Star Nonet with Allan Botschinsky and Butch Lacy . With Toker, the album Erling Kroner Dark Side Orchestra featuring Gustavo Toker on bandoneón was created for Olufsen Records in 1992 and performed with him at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. During this time he also played with the Per Ringkjøbing Quintet and Jan Kaspersen's Special Occasion Band, writing for Mark Murphy . In 1994 he played in the Beijbom Kroner Big Band and recorded a first live album with the BKBB at Jazz Hus. In 1995, Kroner formed his quintet with Pernille Bévort (tenor saxophone), Kurt Larsen (accordion), Jesper Bodilsen (bass) and drummer Henrik Simonsen .

In the late 1990s he also worked with Dino Saluzzi and his Beijbom Kroner Big Band , performed on the jazz stage of the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater with Katrine Suwalski and the Ghanaian Inspiration formation with a. a. Marilyn Mazur up. He also worked again with Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band under the direction of Jesper Thilo , and recorded the album 'Trombonissimo' with his quintet. He also played with Gary Bartz , Jeanne Lee and Bob Rockwell .

In 2000 he continued to lead the Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band with Per Goldschmidt after the leader's death and went on tour with Stig Rossen , played in a duo with Kurt Larsen and in a trio with Ann Farholt and Henrik Bay, reactivated the BKBB for performances in Sweden and London. In the 2000s he continued to work with the Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band a . a. with Clark Terry , his quintet and the Monday Night Big Band , the Jan Kaspersen Special Occasion Band , the Hans Knudsen Jump Band and Leif Johansson's quintet, Niels Jørgen Steens A-Team , the Stig Rossen Band. Most recently, Kroner worked on the La Mariposa tango project with the tango singer Laura Hansen , his New Dreams quintet, in a trio (with Eva Malling and Kurt Larsen) and with his New Music Orchestra .
