Christoph Eymann (born January 15, 1951 in Basel ; entitled to residency there) is a Swiss politician ( LDP ).

Life

Eymann studied 1970-1973 medicine and from 1973 to 1978 jurisprudence at the University of Basel . In 1980 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . From 1980 to 1984 he worked as a lawyer at the Basler Volkswirtschaftsbund (today: Employers' Association of Basel), from 1984 to 2001 as director of the Basel-Stadt trade association. He was a captain in the Swiss Army .

Eymann is married and has three children. His brother, the doctor Felix W. Eymann , is also a politician and a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

politics

Eymann became politically active in 1981 when he was elected a member of the Basel Citizens' Council. From 1984 to 1995 Eymann was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt . From 1991 to 2001 he had a seat in the National Council for the first time . In the nineties he pushed through ecological and socio-political concerns against what was at times great resistance in his own camp. The principle of "sustainable development" was included in the revised federal constitution in accordance with his motion . From 1999 to 2001 Eymann was a member of the Constitutional Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

In 2000, Eymann was elected to the Basel government council and was confirmed in office in 2004, 2008 and 2012. There he was head of the education department. From 2011 to 2013 he was President of the Swiss University Conference. After Isabelle Chassot's resignation , Eymann was elected as the new President of the Conference of Directors of Education (EDK) in 2013. He took office on November 1, 2013. On February 8, 2017, he resigned as a member of the government. He has again been represented in the National Council since 2015. He is part of the FDP parliamentary group and a member of the Commission for Science, Education and Culture.

Eymann is President of Smart Regio Basel, Co-President of the Solar Agency Switzerland (together with Priska Seiler Graf ), member of the board of educationsuisse and President of the association “Kleinbasel - Church for Everyone”. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of S. Karger AG .

Eymann has been President of the Swiss Conference for Social Welfare SKOS since May 23, 2019 .
