Sebastian Frehner (born September 2, 1973 in Basel ; legal resident in Urnäsch and Basel) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ).

Life

Frehner attended the business school in Basel. After graduating from high school in 1994, he studied law at the University of Freiburg and graduated in 2000 with a licentiate . In June 2007 he received his doctorate there with the dissertation The civil law inadmissibility of competition agreements . He is also an auditor licensed by the Federal Audit Oversight Authority (FAOA). He works as an entrepreneur in the field of management consulting and public affairs . Before that, he worked together with Joël Thüring in the field of political consulting. Since Thuringia was involved in various scandals, Frehner separated from him. In addition, Frehner was a member of the Bank Council of Basler Kantonalbank from 2009 to 2017 and a member of the Board of Directors of Bank Cler from 2015 to 2019 . He is married and lives in Riehen .

In the summer of 1996, Frehner joined the SVP Basel-Stadt . In autumn 2004 he was elected to the Grand Council , of which he was a member from February 2, 2005 to September 30, 2014. He was President of the Disciplinary Commission and a member of the Finance Commission.

From January 2006 Frehner was a member of the executive board and vice-president of SVP Basel-Stadt, and since April 8, 2006 he has been a member of the central board of SVP Switzerland. In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2007 , he made it to second place behind the elected National Councilor Jean Henri Dunant . After his resignation, Frehner joined the National Council on November 29, 2010. He was re-elected in the elections on October 23, 2011 and October 18, 2015. He was a member of the Social Security and Health Commission, the Finance Commission and the Judicial Commission.

During his time as a national councilor, he made a name for himself as a health and finance politician. He was particularly involved in business matters and was a member of the following business- related bodies: Advisory Board Groupe Mutuel , Advisory Board SwissBoardForum, Advisory Board Gastrosuisse , Advisory Board Spiritsuisse , Advisory Board Treuhandsuisse, Advisory Board Swiss Retail Federation. He also had the reputation of being a lobbyist for the Basel pharmaceutical industry. He was a member of the interest group biomedical research and innovation ( interpharma ) and the working group health ( association of pharmaceutical companies in Switzerland ).

From 2009 to 2017 he was President of SVP Basel-Stadt. As such, he followed an independent course and was therefore considered an opponent of SVP superfather Christoph Blocher .

He is a member of the 2013 founded at the initiative of beverage manufacturers lobby group for sweet drinks IG soft drinks . In the 2019 parliamentary elections , Frehner lost his seat in the National Council and declared his withdrawal from active politics.
