The Chumpi district is located in the Parinacochas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of 372 km². The 2017 census counted 2334 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3123, in 2007 it was 2981. The seat of the district administration is the 3201 m high village Chumpi with 1151 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chumpi is located 9 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Coracora .
Geographical location
The Chumpi district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central southwest of the Parinacochas province. The district measures 33 km in an east-west direction and 23 km in a north-south direction. In the south it reaches up to 4.5 km to the north shore of the lake Laguna Parinacochas . The district extends in the west to the Río Yauca , in the east to the Río Pararca, tributary of the Río Marán .
The Chumpi district on the south by the districts Puyusca and Pullo , on the east by the district Chaviña ( province Lucanas ), to the north by the district Coracora and the east by the district Lampa ( province Paucar del Sara Sara ).
