Cassinelli began his career as a stage actor. During this time he worked with well-known greats in Italian theater such as Gabriele Lavia and Luca Ronconi ; with the latter a production of Phaedra stands out.

At the end of the 1960s, the film also noticed him. Cassinelli initially worked in two artistically ambitious productions. From 1973 he devoted himself to genre cinema, especially the Poliziottesco , with occasional excursions to more ambitious productions.

In Germany he became known alongside Mario Adorf in the film Death wears black leather by Massimo Dallamano . On the side of Barbara Bach and Mel Ferrer , he starred in The flow of killer crocodiles from Sergio Martino , who used him even in other films: So Cassinelli played with Ursula Andress in The Mountain of the Cannibal God . In the little acclaimed film Hercules (1983) he played Zeus alongside Sybil Danning , Gianni Garko , William Berger and Brad Harris . Some television productions also secured Cassinelli's performance skills. He died while filming a Sergio Martino film when he was killed in a helicopter accident.

Cassinelli was married to the journalist Irene Bignardi.
