Clearwater is a city in the US state of Minnesota . It is located in Stearns and Wright Counties and has a population of 858.

geography

Clearwater is located in the northwest of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area . Most of the city is in Wright County , only 0.18 square kilometers of uninhabited area belongs to Stearns County . In the east of the city runs the Mississippi , into which the Clearwater River flows north of Clearwater . According to the United States Census Bureau , the area of ​​the city is 3.3 square kilometers, of which 0.3 square kilometers is water.

history

Clearwater was created in the 1850s by the settlement of immigrants from New England and Canada . The population grew rapidly and in 1856 a sawmill and two flour mills opened on the Clearwater River . In the same year the post office was opened. The city was named after the river and lake of the same name.

In 1897, a flood caused by heavy rainfall broke the dam on the Clearwater River and collapsed a railway bridge.

Clearwater has a junction with Interstate 94 , which provides a direct link to the Twin Cities and towards St. Cloud .

Previously there was a connection with a cable ferry from Clearwater to the opposite side of the Mississippi. It was established in 1856 and was in operation for a long time. Today a bridge on Minnesota State Route 24 crosses the river.
