history

Clinton was founded in 1835 by Jesse Fell, a Bloomington, Illinois businessman and Illinois General Assembly MP James Allan. You were on a business trip from Bloomington to Decatur and stopped halfway there. The position seemed ideal to them for the construction of a new settlement, especially since no one had yet inhabited the area. The settlement was named Clinton in honor of former New York Governor DeWitt Clinton.

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech in Clinton. The following quote has come down to us from this:

You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

You can fool all people for a while, some even all the time. But you cannot permanently fool all people.
