Corvus J is an earlier name of a container ship thatcollidedwith the car carrier Baltic Ace off the Dutch coast in December 2012. The Baltic Ace then sank. The Corvus J was at the time under the flag of Cyprus as a feeder vessel of BG Freight Line between Antwerp and the United Kingdom used. Theship, managed by Jüngerhans Maritime Services , belonged to Mare Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG MS "CORVUS J". The affreightment was incumbent on u. a. by the shipping companies Wessels founded and Jüngerhans Harener company Arkon Shipping . Jüngerhans Maritime Services Fleet operated also the sister ship Cetus J .

The ship is now in service as the Charon J for a Jordanian company flying the Panamanian flag.

history

The ship was built under construction number 201 at the Detlef Hegemann Roland shipyard in Berne . The keel was laid on June 14, 2002, the launch on January 8, 2003. The ship was completed on March 24, 2003. The ship started sailing as Maersk Westland .

collision

On 5 December 2012, collided Corvus J en route from Grangemouth (Scotland) to Antwerp (Belgium) in the dark, snow flurries and up high to three feet waves about 65 kilometers off the Dutch coast with the car carrier Baltic Ace , which refers to the On the way from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Kotka in Finland. The Baltic Ace sank within a very short time after the collision. The Corvus J was damaged but remained buoyant. She took part in the rescue work and then anchored in the roadstead .

Ship description

The ship is around 134 meters long and 19.4 meters wide. The maximum draft is 7.3 meters. The ship is measured at 6,370  GT and has a load capacity of around 8,400 tdw, has parking spaces for 630  TEU and can hold around 3,700 m³ of ballast water .

The medium - speed eight - cylinder four - stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Caterpillar in Kiel , type MaK  8 M 43 , develops 7200  kW at 500 rpm. It acts on a controllable pitch propeller via gears and gives the ship a speed of 18  knots . To support berthing and casting off maneuvers as well as turning maneuvers, the ship has a bow thruster with a rated output of 1000 kW. A shaft generator with a nominal output of 1250 kVA and two auxiliary diesel generators with  538 kVA each are installed to generate electricity . The emergency generator has a nominal output of 500 kVA.

The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice. The ship has ice class E.

The ship has three holds . It is described with a container capacity of 630 TEU, which is distributed over 15 bays and of which 190 units can be found in the room and 440 on deck or 307 FEU. With a homogeneous loading with 14 t heavy containers 406 TEU can be loaded. The ship is prepared for loading with 20'-, 30'-, 40'- and 45'-containers. When loaded with 30 'containers, the capacity is 364 units; when loaded with 45' containers, there is space for 252 units. Four containers can be stowed one above the other and six next to each other in the three cargo holds. There is space for seven containers side by side on deck, which can be stowed in up to seven layers on top of each other , taking into account the line of sight . The ship has 100 connections for reefer containers. Of these, 50 are on deck and 50 in holds 2 and 3.

The deckhouse is at the very aft . The containers are completely stowed in front of the deckhouse. The ship does not have its own loading gear .
