Coup d'Etat ( proper spelling : COUP D'ETAT , French for coup ) is the second studio album by the South Korean rapper G-Dragon . The first part of the album was released digitally on September 2, 2013 and the second on September 5, 2013. The album's CD was released on September 13, 2013.

Emergence

In an interview with Complex, G-Dragon said that he no longer felt connected to his first album. About the development of his music he said:

“Now, I've been in the game for a long time and I understand how to balance things out. I realized I was making music that wasn't overdone. I'm more comfortable when I rap. Whether it's music or fashion, the older I get, I realize more and more that what is pleasant lasts longer. And there's a lot of that in the album. "

Most of the album was made with producers Choice37, Teddy Park and Kush. In an interview with LOEN Entertainment , G-Dragon said that it took almost two years to record and produce the album. In 2011 he started recording demos for "Niliria" and "Runaway". He said:

“There are various reasons why the second album was a long time coming. For the most part, I always wanted to do things better and better. I have a lot of songs that I have planned that are not well organized. So, instead of releasing incomplete songs, I wanted to shorten and narrow things. That's why we first released "One of a Kind" in 2012. In the remaining time, I re-recorded individual songs, merged them and now they are done. Whenever I consider releasing something, I always feel like more is needed. I wouldn't say that I'm not confident, but rather that it makes sense to want to do everything better. That's why it took so long. "

Cover design

On the cover there is a white or black CND symbol with a missing line. From this incomplete peace symbol you can recognize a GD that stands for G-Dragon.

publication

Coup d'Etat was published digitally in two parts. The first five songs were released on September 2nd and the remaining seven on September 5th. The physical version of the album contained two extra songs and was released on September 13th.

At the end of September a limited record was announced for October 18th. The limited edition included a sticker, mask, booklet with handwritten text, photos from the "Space Eight" art exhibition in Seoul, and photos from the Coup d'Etat music video. The record was limited to 8,888 and sold out within three days.

In an interview with MTV , Alexis Stephens said that with Coup d'Etat, G-Dragon created "a postmodern pastiche of worldwide pop sounds". Billboard's Jeff Benjamin and Jessica Oak said the "album states that K-pop stars are no different from Western pop stars and really are no different from everyday people because they also deal with insecurities and relationships."
