Monestier is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 61 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardèche department in the historic cultural landscape of Vivarais .

Monestier is located in the mountainous and wooded landscape of the southeastern edge of the Massif Central, almost 17 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of Annonay and about 75 kilometers northeast of Le Puy-en-Velay at an altitude of about 820 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous decline in the number of inhabitants since the beginning of the 20th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
Traditionally, the population lived from cattle breeding and a little agriculture, which, however, only produced low yields due to the altitude. Today forestry and tourism play the most important roles in the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
In ancient times the area belonged to the settlement area of the Celtic tribe of the Helvier . The medieval town and its castle were probably not built until the 13th century, although the place name also suggests the existence of a monastery or priory. In the second half of the 16th century, the place and its castle were affected by the turmoil of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
Attractions
- The single-aisled church of St-Roch , which was largely built from little hewn stone , dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Century; it was the destination of pilgrims and pilgrims for centuries .
- The former castle was destroyed during the religiously motivated disputes, but was then partially rebuilt. Today the mayor's office and several holiday apartments are located here.
