Csaba Némedi

Csaba Némedi (* in Hungary ) is a Hungarian-Austrian opera director and music theater scholar .

Life

Némedi was born and raised in Hungary. He gained his first theater experience in the field of classical stage dance as a child .

After graduating from the Humanistic Gymnasium in Miskolc (Northern Hungary), he obtained a diploma in general health and nursing from the Salzburg State Clinics (SALK) / St. Johanns Spital ( University Clinics Salzburg ) , initially worked as an anesthesiologist and studied alongside this activity Human medicine .

In October 2002, he began studying theater , film and media studies (TFM) at the University of Vienna with a focus on music and dance theater , which he completed with a Mag. Phil. completed.

At the same time, he attended the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in the subjects of music theater directing, scenic instruction, Italian, the history of songs and oratorios , cultural history and libretto and completed internships . In February and March 2003 he worked as an assistant director and stage manager at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn and from April to June 2003 as an intern at the Vienna State Opera . Here he worked on the new production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde , directed by Günter Krämer and under the musical direction of Christian Thielemann .

Between 2003 and 2006 he worked as assistant director at the Zurich Opera House before making his directorial debut with Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor in the Principality of Liechtenstein in the summer of 2006 .

In 2007 and 2009 Némedi took part in international music theater directing competitions with works by Gioachino Rossini ( Il viaggio a Reims ) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( La finta giardiniera ) . From 2012 to the end of 2017 he was artistic director of the Schloss Kirchstetten classical music festival .

Némedi made his debut in 2011 with Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus (musical direction: Hooman Khalatbari , equipment: Vazul Matusz ) at the Schloss Kirchstetten classical music festival. The production was awarded the Maecenas Prize 2011.

Furthermore, from the 2015 festival season, he played a key role in the repositioning, conception and expansion of the Schloss Kirchstetten classical music festival into a bel canto opera festival. The Kirchstetten Belcanto Festival started in 2015 with its own Donizetti cycle ( L'elisir d'amore , Don Pasquale , La fille du régiment ) with an international line-up. His other directorial work includes the two one-act plays Peace Day and Daphne (set design: Gilles Gubelmann , costumes: Gianpiera Bühlmann ) in 2015 at Müpa Budapest (former Palace of the Arts) under the musical direction of GMD Zoltán, as part of the Budapest Richard Strauss cycle Kocsis . The performance of Peace Day was the Hungarian premiere of the work. The development was recorded by Müpa in a documentary film.

In May 2017, Müpa Budapest started working again with Csaba Némedi. This was a new production of Vincenzo Bellini's opera I puritani (musical direction: Riccardo Frizza , equipment: Gilles Gubelmann). This production was occupied by Jessica Pratt , Klára Kolonits , Andrea Szántó , Francesco Demuro , Alexey Markov , Gábor Bretz and Miklós Sebestyén , among others . Aleszja Popova took on the role of Maria Callas , which Némedi added to this production .

In the course of his directorial activities at Müpa Budapest, Némedi initiated and organized two project-related exhibitions. In addition to the two Richard Strauss one-act plays (2015), he brought parts of the exhibition "Does Language Already Has Singing In It", previously shown at the Austrian Theater Museum in Vienna ... "Richard Strauss and the opera at Müpa Budapest. In 2017 it was about the exhibition Hommage à Maria Callas, which took place on the occasion of the Maria Callas commemorative year.

As a continuation of the previous I puritani production, Némedi was engaged again at Müpa Budapest and the Kodály Center Pécs in spring 2020 to perform Vincenzo Bellini's opera La sonnambula under the musical direction of Riccardo Frizza (set design: Éva Szendrényi , costumes: Gergely Z Zöldy ) stage. The cast of said production also included Zuzana Marková , Konu Kim , Mirco Palazzi and Eszter Zemlényi . The ballet dancer Alexandra Kozmér took on the role of Myrtha , the queen of the Wilis , which Némedi added in this production .

For the 2019/20 season opening, Némedi was invited by the Hungarian Opera in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) to perform G. Verdi's seldom performed fourth opera I Lombardi alla prima crociata (musical director: Szabolcs Kulcsár , set designer: Gilles Gubelmann) with an international cast stage. The bel canto specialist made her role and house debut in the role of Giselda , and Elena Moșuc is the dramatic coloratura soprano . This performance series also represented the Romanian premiere of the work. The premiere was recorded by the Romanian public television TVR Cluj . The editors of the Italian online opera magazine OperaClick ranked this production among the best opera performances of 2019 worldwide.

In October 2014, he began a doctoral degree in musical theater (opera) at the University of Vienna. His primary research areas include the era of Italian bel canto and Hungarian opera history in the 20th century. In addition to his current directorial work, as well as in the context of his research work, he has already given several guest lectures at the University of Vienna ( Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies ).
