cupcakKe (2017)

Elizabeth Eden Harris (born May 31, 1997 in Chicago , Illinois ), better known by her stage name cupcakKe , is an American rapper . Her musical oeuvre, located between dirty rap and alternative hip-hop , is characterized above all by explicit, sometimes hypersexual lyrics. Harris self- published two mixtapes and four studio albums through 2018 .

Life

Elizabeth Eden Harris grew up near the Parkway Garden Homes, a residential complex for lower income groups in Chicago. Starting at the age of seven, she spent nearly four years in shelters with her single mother, a telephone seller . At the age of ten, Harris began helping her church community by reading Christian poetry. At the age of 13, a churchgoer encouraged her to turn her poetry into rap. The first influences she names 50 Cent , Da Brat , Lil 'Kim and Kanye West . During her school days, other rappers on the local scene like Lil Reese and Chief Keef were her companions.

Career

At the age of 13, Harris recorded a first demo with her mother's savings and started uploading raps to YouTube . At the end of 2015 she decided to write sexually explicit material inspired by the Khia hit My Back, My Neck (Lit It) . The two self-produced videos to vagina and Deep Throat were viral success and the rapper bestowed a boost in popularity. In February 2016 she released her first mixtape called Cum Cake . After first appearances in Chicago, she made her second mixtape STD (Shelters to Deltas) follow in June and performed for the first time in the United Kingdom . In October of the same year, CupcakKe's first studio album, Audacious , was released, which received critical acclaim from websites such as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone . In March 2017 she made a guest appearance on the track Lipgloss by the British singer Charli XCX and released her second studio album with Queen Elizabitch . After two North American tours , two single releases announced their third album Ephorize , which was released in January 2018. It peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Independent Albums and number two on the Heatseekers chart . For her fourth album, Eden , released just ten months later, Harris first got support from various songwriters.

In January 2019, Harris hit the headlines with a suicidal tweet . The police took her to a hospital to have her mental health checked and later said that she had been depressed for a long time . Musical companions like Charli XCX and Iggy Azalea then encouraged her on social media. Only three days later she released the single Squidward Nose , and in April she had her own remix of the chart topper Old Town Road followed by the title Old Town Hoe . In September, Harris announced the end of her career in a completely surprising live Instagram video. She announced that she wanted to remove her music from all streaming platforms and justified this step by saying that her content would "corrupt the youth". After she temporarily deactivated her social media accounts, Harris announced a comeback in early November with the words "Jesus fasted for 40 days & so did I ...... nov 16th". In spring 2020 she released three singles again.

style

Harris alias CupcakKe is assigned to the styles Dirty Rap and Alternative Hip-Hop by Allmusic . Her first textually and visually explicit releases in 2015 brought her comparisons with rappers like Lil 'Kim , Foxy Brown and Gangsta Boo . Nicki Minaj and King Louie are also mentioned as possible influences . Many of their humorous, playful songs and videos deal with the topic of sexuality in graphical detail, which prompted YouTube to temporarily remove several of their videos from the platform in 2018. CupcakKe's texts also address serious issues such as child abuse (pedophiles) , racially motivated police violence (Picking Cotton) or LGBTQ empowerment (Crayons) . In Reality, Pt. 2 she addresses her experiences with poverty and homelessness a cappella : "So listen ... barely eating, so I thank God for this bite / No light, food or gas, but I thank God for them nights."

"As she's applied herself to albums, as opposed to stand-alone videos, Harris's most audaciously filthy singles work as gateways to confessional, cathartic songs about real life that feel more like poetry than comedy, as revealing as her raunchiest anthems."

"By focusing on albums rather than individual videos, Harris's daring, filthiest singles act as gateways to sectarian, cathartic songs about real life that feel more like poetry than comedy, but as revealing as their most vulgar anthems."

- Meaghan Garvey (MTV)

According to MTV's Meaghan Garvey , the tech-savvy rapper CupcakKe represents the "unlikeable woman" type with her slippery, idiosyncratic joke. In terms of uncompromising and originality, her work is reminiscent of the artist Tracey Emin and the writer Jenny Zhang . Harris, who, in contrast to her stage persona , describes herself as calm and reserved in private , makes it a point not to be dismissed as a joke or a meme . So far, she has turned down the offered record contracts out of fear for her artistic freedom.
