history

Monastery church

The market town in Mazovia was first mentioned in the 11th century in the privilege of the Benedictine abbey in Mogilno in 1065. It belonged to the Bishop of Plock since 1075 . Before 1155, the Canon Regular Abbey (Cervenscum) was founded by Bishop Alexander von Plock (1129-1156). The origin of the canons is controversial in literature, possible are Lateran, Arrouaise, St-Victor in Paris, probably St. Aegidius in Liège.

The art-historically significant monastery church was built in the second quarter of the 12th century. After the abbey was founded, half of Czerwińsk belonged to the abbot and half to the bishop of Plock. The bishop's part received in 1373, the monastic 1582 city law . In 1410 the Polish-Lithuanian army united in Czerwińsk on the way to the battle of Tannenberg . In 1422, the Polish nobility in Czerwińsk received an important privilege, which forbade the confiscation of their property without a court ruling.

In 1870 Czerwińsk lost its town charter. During an administrative reform, the place came in 1975 to the newly formed Płock Voivodeship . After another reform and the associated dissolution of the voivodeship, the Masovian Voivodeship came into being in 1999. On January 1, 2020, Czerwińsk regained its city rights.
