DA Pennebaker
Donn Alan "DA" Pennebaker (born July 15, 1925 in Evanston , Illinois , † August 1, 2019 on Long Island ) was an American documentary filmmaker and one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema . Pop music , action art, and politicians were his favorite subjects, and his style was often characterized by the use of a handheld camera.
In the early 1960s, Pennebaker (known as "Penny" by friends) founded the production company Drew Associates with Richard Leacock and Robert Drew . In 1963 Leacock and Pennebaker left this again to set up their own production company. Later he often worked with his wife Chris Hegedus . Her company, Pennebaker Hegedus Films , has produced a number of documentaries.
In 2012, Pennebaker was awarded an honorary Oscar for his life's work ahead of the 2013 Academy Awards . He died at his Long Island home on August 1, 2019, at the age of 94.
