The steam locomotives of Series 02 were unit - express train locomotives of the German State Railroad Company (DRG) with four-cylinder compound engine. 02 001 was the DRG's first completed standard steam locomotive.

history

When purchasing a standard express train steam locomotive, the Deutsche Reichsbahn carried out a comparison of a superheated steam twin design ( series 01 ) with a four-cylinder composite design (series 02). Ten advance copies of both types were built from 1925 onwards. The vehicles of the 02 series were given the road numbers 02 001–02 010. The first eight locomotives were manufactured in 1925 by the Henschel company , and two more in 1926 by Maffei .

Since the steam engine of the 02 series was inadequately designed, the compound steam engine could only develop an appealing, higher performance at speeds above 70 km / h . Below 1000 PSi, the steam consumption was also higher than with the 01 series - a point of criticism.

Since the vehicles also had a more complicated engine than the 01 series , which required more maintenance due to the design , they were no longer manufactured. From 1937 to 1942, the vehicles in the Meiningen RAW were gradually converted to two-cylinder engines and assigned to the 01 series with the company numbers 01 011 and 01 233–01 241.

The comparison operation of the locomotives of the series 01 and 02 took place in the depot in Erfurt P , Hamm (Westf) P and Hof . As early as the late 1920s, all 02 were concentrated in the Hof depot, which had experience in operating four-cylinder compound locomotives ( Bavarian S 3/6 / DR 18.4-5 and Saxon XII HV / DR 17.7). To do this, the Hof depot had to return its 01 first. Even after the conversion, the locomotives stayed in Hof, so that they all came to the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) after the war. The last former 02 - 01 234, converted from 02 003 - was taken out of service in Hof on May 8, 1972.

The vehicles were used as an interim solution. T. (?) Was delivered with a tender of the type 2'2 T 30. Later they were all equipped with a type 2'2 T 32 tender.
