The Secret of the Red Mask is a 1959 Italian adventure film directed by Luigi Capuano .

action

In the late Middle Ages in Italy : The knight Marco and his two simple-minded companions Uguccione and Fanello come as mercenaries to the lord of the castle Astolfo, who ruled the county of Roccarosa as the guardian of his niece Jolanda after the death of his brother. Astolfo oppresses the people with high taxes and the ruthless use of his soldiers, but his soldiers are repeatedly attacked by rebels whose leader wears a red mask, and not even the rebels know the identity of their leader.

A bear breaks loose during a dance by the gypsy Karima, but Marco manages to defeat the bear. Both Karima and Jolanda become aware of the attractive Marco. Astolfo doesn't like that, because when his niece gets married, her husband automatically becomes the new ruler. But Egidio, the commandant of the soldiers, has also fallen in love with Jolanda.

When Astolfo lets the gypsies slip stolen goods from his soldiers, Marco stands up for the gypsies and flees with Karima. The rebels in the red mask protect them from the soldiers. Uguccione and Fanello meanwhile sneak into the castle disguised as monks to get Fanello's monkey Frieda out of there. But they are recognized and can just hide in Jolanda's room, who can bring them out of the castle through a secret passage. She also gives them a message to Marco stating where she wants to meet him secretly. When the two convey the message to Marco, Karima overhears them. Out of jealousy, she reveals the meeting point to Astolfo and Marco is captured at the meeting. Astolfo wants to have Marco executed in public, but the rebels storm the castle. Egidio, who is fatally injured, confesses to Jolanda that Astolfo poisoned her father in order to come to power.

Fearing the rebels of the red mask, Karima flees to Jolanda's room and finds the red mask in a hiding place. She realizes that Jolanda is the red mask and that she will not find salvation in her room either. So she puts on the disguise herself and hopes to escape the castle in this way. Astolfo's soldiers are inferior to the rebels, but he believes he will still win when he kills Karima with a throwing knife because he thinks she is the red mask. In a duel, Marco defeats Astolfo and becomes the new ruler of the county as Jolanda's husband.
