The Girl on the Sea Floor is the title of a film adaptation of Hans Hass's first diving expedition in the Red Sea in 1950. The main roles were played by Yvonne Catterfeld and Benjamin Sadler . The film is a co-production by ZDF and ORF . The media premiere took place in Vienna on November 24, 2011 ; the first broadcast took place on December 8, 2011. 4.34 million people aged three and over saw the film, which corresponded to a market share of 13.5%.

action

The film begins with Hans Hass and his best friend preparing for the diving expedition. He is looking for an assistant and the young Viennese photographer Lotte Baierl gets the job. When Hass approaches a film producer in search of a financier, the condition is that the documentation of the expedition be prepared as a feature film and Lotte, as a pretty girl, should take part in a broadly effective manner. Hass then throws his principle overboard not to take women on his expeditions. The trip across the Red Sea is all about looking for a great white shark, which Hass wants to be the first person to get in front of the camera.

production

The commissioning production company was Producers at Work . The Dutchman Ben Verbong was hired as director. The film was shot in late summer 2010 in Vienna, Egypt, Morocco and off Ibiza. The basis of the film is the book documentation A Girl on the Seabed by Lotte Hass from 1970. The film was funded by the Filmstiftung NRW, Medienboard Berlin - Brandenburg, Filmfonds Wien and Fernsehfonds Austria.

In the underwater stunt scenes, the actress Yvonne Catterfeld was doubled by the German record freediver Anna von Boetticher .

reception

The lexicon of international films said: “(TV) love film, based on the biography of Lotte Hass (born 1928). With excellent underwater shots he familiarizes himself with the undersea pioneering work of the married couple Hass, while the private conflicts come into their own thanks to good acting performances, but the associated waves of emotions become ballast for the film and the narrative comes to a standstill. "

Spiegel online criticizes that the film ripples in the shallow water of unkind entertainment. Even the great white shark surrenders to the kitsch of the 1950s.

Cameraman Gert Kappes was awarded the 23rd award of the Austrian film and television prize Romy for his underwater recordings in the category Best Camera TV Film in 2012, Lotte and Hans Hass received the Platinum Romy for their life's work in the same year.
