Date A Live is an ongoing Since 2013 Anime - television series based on the eponymous Light-Novel series of Japanese author Koshi Tachibana based.

The series includes three seasons , two OVAs and a feature film . In 2019, two more anime projects related to Date A Live were announced. The first project is an implementation of the offshoot Date A Bullet - see Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet - and was announced in 2019. The second project is the production of a fourth season of the main series, which was confirmed on March 16, 2020.

The anime series follows the high school student Shidō Itsuka, who has the ability to seal the powers of female nature spirits - Japanese 精 霊 seirei - with a kiss . He is supported by the Ratatoskr organization, which wants to render the spirits harmless without killing them. The Anti Spirit Team (AST) of the Japanese ground self-defense forces and the weapons manufacturer Deus Ex Machina Industry (DEM) act as opponents, who want to extinguish the ghosts or misuse them for their own purposes.

action

Thirty years before the action began, a devastating earthquake that cost 150 million lives devastated large parts of Eurasia . Since then, these earthquakes have appeared again and again around the world, albeit on a smaller scale, causing great destruction. When the high school student Shidō Itsuka one day tries to evacuate his younger sister Kotori, who according to GPS is in the area to be evacuated, he meets a mysterious girl. Shortly before Shidō becomes involved in a fight between the mysterious girl and the AST special unit - the anti-spirit team of the Japanese ground self-defense forces - he is teleported on board the airship . There he learns from Kotori that this girl is a "nature spirit" - Japanese 精 霊 seirei - and that the room tremors are triggered as a side effect when they change into our world.

Kotori herself is the commander of the Fraxinus , the airship of the Ratatoskr organization , which wants to try peaceful ways to neutralize the nature spirits. Shidō learns that he is able to seal the powers of the Seirei with a kiss and now has to make them fall in love with him. Opponents are the AST, who are trying to kill the spirits, as well as the weapons manufacturer Deus Ex Machina Industry , who would go over corpses to gain the power of the nature spirits.

production

As early as November 14, 2011, an implementation of Kōshi Tachibana's light novel series was announced, with the Fantasia Bunko magazine published by Fushimi Shobo saying that the publisher “never announced an anime adaptation from the imprint as quickly as These ones."

In mid-September 2018, a website for the upcoming anime series for Date A Live was launched on which all information, including the animation studio, the production team and some of the voice actors, was announced. The first season was created in the animation studio AIC Plus + under the direction of Keitarō Motonaga , who was already involved in the productions of Getbackers and Jormungand . The screenplay was written by Hideki Shirane while the music was composed by Go Sakabe . The character design comes from the pen of Satoshi Ishino . Seiyū Nobunaga Shimazaki speaks the main character Shidō Itsuka, Marina Inoue lends her voice to Tohka Yatogami. In the other roles, Ayane Taketatsu as Kotori Itsuka, Misuzu Togachi as Origami Tobiichi, Iori Nomizu as Yoshino and Asami Sanada as Kurumi Tokisaki were presented.

Four days after the announcement, a first three-minute promotional video was released in which the opening credits song Date A Live by sweet ARMS can be heard.

With the broadcast of the twelfth episode of the first season, it was announced that the production of a second season had been given the green light. The production was taken over by the animation studio Production IMS , while most of the cast who were responsible for the creation of the first season could be retained. In addition, with Sarah Emi Bridcutt , Maaya Uchida , Ryōtarō Okiayu, new voice actors joined the cast . Again with Trust in You, the song in the opening credits comes from sweet ARMS.

After the production and release of a feature film in 2015, the series remained silent for a long time until it became known in 2018 that the animation studio Production IMS had to file for bankruptcy. A third season was implemented by JCStaff . Again Motonaga took over the direction and Shirane worked again on the script. Only Koji Watanabe , who was the key animator in the first two seasons , designed the characters for Date A Live III . sweet ARMS sang the opening credits again with I Swear .

In September 2019, two anime projects for Date A Live were announced. The first project is an anime version of the offshoot Date A Bullet , in the form of two movies - Dead or Bullet and Nightmare or Queen - which was announced first. The second project is the production of the fourth season, which was officially confirmed on March 16, 2020.

publication

In Japan

The first season was initially announced by AIC Plus + for January 2013, but was then postponed to a later date. On January 17, 2013, it was said that the anime series would be streamed in advance on the Niconico platform from March 16 of the same year , before the series officially starts the following month. In Japan, the first season of the series was shown on Tokyo MX between April 6 and June 22, 2013 .

The ninth volume of the light novel series was accompanied by a Blu-ray disc with a thirteenth episode not previously shown.

Distribution received the license for a DVD and Blu-ray release of the series in German-speaking countries . At the end of July of the same year it was announced that the company had also secured the rights to the two OVAs . The first OVA, Date To Date, is included on the third volume of the DVD and Blu-ray version as bonus material. The second OVA, Kurumi Star Festival is included on the third volume for the second season. The third season should appear on disc from April 2020, but was postponed several times in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany and the associated closings of the dubbing studios and the delivery of the additional material that is being produced in the People's Republic of China .

In Germany only the third season was shown in simulcast on Wakanim . The first two seasons were broadcast on April 19 and June 28 and between August 27 and October 29, 2019 on ProSieben Maxx on German television as part of the “Anime Night”.

The first two seasons can be seen temporarily in the German version of Netflix .

review

Anne Betz wrote about the anime series in her article for AnimaniA magazine . So she found that the series was fortunately not trying to sell the viewer its "Date-a-Ghost-joke as action - or romance- anime." Instead, the series has a " harem gag" and " Magical Girl - Swipe ”after the other. And when you've got used to laughing, says Betz, the beautiful and actually romantic scenes follow. Betz found that not all of the gentlemen's jokes and genre tropes that are taken up in the series are sublime. Nevertheless, the anime series manages to come across as light-hearted, entertaining and dating sim-in love, so that it can elicit a conciliatory smile from even harem haters.

"Fortunately, the TV series is not trying to sell you its date-a-ghost jokes as any serious action or romance anime. Instead, DATE A LIVE, like an otaku with infectious enthusiasm for his favorite genre, throws out a harem gag and magical girl swipe, one punch and pick-up line after the other […] and when you get used to laughing have, precisely also the beautiful, actually romantic ones. The genre tropes and men's jokes that were handed out with full hands in DATE A LIVE are not beyond any doubt and they are not all successful either. But somehow the series still manages to come across so light-hearted, entertaining and Bishojo-Dating-Sim-in love that the opening volume can even elicit conciliatory smiles from harem haters. "

- Anne Betz in her review in AnimaniA

Censorship in the People's Republic of China

In June 2015, the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China announced that 38 manga , anime and video game titles would be banned in the People's Republic of China , including the second season of Date-A-Live. Liu Qiang , a member of the ministry, said that the listing of the titles was based on investigator reviews, ministry meetings, and expert judgment. The reasons given for the prohibitions were the depictions of scenes glorifying violence, pornography , terrorism , crimes against public morality and the influencing of young people to commit such acts.
