David "Clem" Clempson (born September 5, 1949 in Tamworth , Staffordshire , England ) is a British guitarist who was a member of several rock bands , including Colosseum and Humble Pie .

biography

In the late 1960s, Clempson began his musical career with the band Bakerloo. In this blues power trio, Clempson played the central role of singer and guitarist. When Bakerloo played in the opening act for Colosseum, Jon Hiseman became aware of Clempson and brought him to Colosseum in 1969 as singer and guitarist. In 1970 Chris Farlowe took over the position of singer. After Colosseum broke up, Clempson moved to Steve Marriott's Humble Pie in 1971 , replacing Peter Frampton .

In 1975 Clempson founded the power trio Strange Brew together with Greg Ridley and Cozy Powell , which only existed for two months because Clempson had an accident. In the same year he was invited by Deep Purple to replace Ritchie Blackmore , but this collaboration also ended after a few days. At the same time, Clempson was helping out with the band Snafu . In January 1976, Clempson became a member of Steve Marriott's All Stars, but this experiment also came to an end after a short time when Marriott revived the small faces .

In September 1976 Clempson formed the group Rough Diamond with David Byron , which renamed itself Champion after Byron's departure in 1977 and disbanded in 1979. He then joined Jack Bruce , with whom he recorded albums, TV appearances and toured. He also played in the bands of well-known musicians such as Roger Chapman , Roger Daltrey , Cozy Powell, Ken Hensley , Jon Anderson , Tom Waits , Tanita Tikaram , Chris de Burgh , Bonnie Tyler and Bob Dylan .

In 1994 there was the reunification of Colosseum. Two studio and two live albums as well as sold out tours followed.

After Alex Conti left in spring 2008, he is a permanent member of the Hamburg Blues Band , with whom he recorded the album Mad Dog Blues, which was released in November 2008 .

Clempson was also involved as a session musician, composer or arranger in a number of film scores, including Evita , GI Jane , Lawn Dogs , Tomorrow Never Dies and Notting Hill .

In 2011 he toured with Colosseum, Arthur Brown and Chris Farlowe . In 2012 he left the Hamburg Blues Band after a performance at the Herzberg Festival to start a solo project.

Since 2018 he has been a member of the band JCM (with Mark Clarke b, voc) founded by drummer Jon Hiseman and recorded the CD "Heroes" with them. In spring 2018 the band u. a. in Germany before the new album, but had to cancel the tour at the end of April 2018 due to the serious illness of Jon Hiseman († June 12, 2018). In spring 2019, JCM went on tour again with drummer Ralph Salmins.
