David Drake (actor)

David Drake (* 27. June 1963 in Edgewood , Maryland as David Dracula ) is an American actor , playwright , theater director and LGBT activist.

In his works he deals with topics such as gay identity, gender , politics and AIDS . Drake is best known for his solo play The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me , for which he has received several awards.

Life

David Drake comes from a family of Romanian descent, which, according to Drake's own research, was allegedly owned by Vlad III. Drăculea descends.

He studied acting at Herbert Berghof's New York drama school HB Studio . From the mid-1980s he appeared in off-Broadway plays such as Street Theater , Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and Pageant .

In 1985 Drake saw a performance of Larry Kramer's play The Normal Heart , which had a lasting impact on him. He became a member of the Act Up and Queer Nation activist groups . In 1990 he began work on the play The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me , in which Drake is a solo performer dealing with the story of a homosexual man in the age of AIDS . The play premiered at the Perry Street Theater in June 1992. It ran there until Drake's 30th birthday on June 27, 1993, which also marked the 24th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Drake received several awards for his performance, including the Obie Award 1993 for best performance. He then toured Europe and Australia with the piece.

From the end of the 1980s, she made her first appearances in film and television productions. In 1993 Drake himself appeared in a performance of Kramer's The Normal Heart . His second solo piece, Son of Drakula , followed in 2002 , in which he deals with his origins. In 1993 he was in Jonathan Demme's AIDS drama Philadelphia alongside Tom Hanks as Bruno to see. In 2000, Tim Kirkman filmed Drake's appearance in Larry Kramer 's The Night Kissed Me and released the result as a film.

From the 2010s he directed several theater productions in the Provincetown Theater. In November 2017 he was appointed artistic director of the theater, which had to lay off numerous employees in a difficult financial situation.

In parallel, Drake teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
