David Young (Bishop)

David Nigel de Lorentz Young CBE (born September 2, 1931 in Poona , India , † August 10, 2008 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Ripon in the Church of England from 1977 to 1999 .

Life

Family and education

David Young was born in India; his father was a brigadier in the British Indian Army there . To attend school, Young returned to England , where he attended Wellington College in Berkshire . He then completed his military service with the Royal Engineers at the Royal Engineers' School of Military Survey from 1950 to 1951. On October 21, 1950 he became a second lieutenant . On October 15, 1951, he retired from active military service and became a reserve officer in the Supplementary Reserve of Officers. He studied Mathematics at Balliol College of Oxford University , where he graduated with a First Class Degree.

Church career

After graduating, Young worked briefly (1955/1956) as a mathematician in the research department of the electronics company Plessey . It was during this time that Young's desire for a career in church service arose. In preparation for the priesthood he studied theology at Wycliffe Hall College, Oxford University. In 1959 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1960 he was ordained a priest . After his ordination, he was from 1959 to 1962 parish vicar ( curate ) at All Hallows Church, a large inner-city congregation with a focus on the field of ecclesiastical mission , in Allerton , a suburb of Liverpool . There was Robert Martineau , later Bishop of Blackburn, pastor and Young's theological mentor. Young then went to London and studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies the languages Sanskrit and Pali . During this time he was the parish vicar ( curate ) at St Mark's Church on Hamilton Terrace, in the borough of St John's Wood in northwest London.

In 1963 he went to Sri Lanka as a missionary with the Church Missionary Society . There, Young's interest in Buddhism and other Far Eastern religions developed. He became director in 1965 ( Director ) for Buddhist Studies ( Buddhist Studies ) at Lanka Theological College near Kandy . In 1967, after the death († 1966) of his first wife, he returned to England with his two young children and became a lecturer in Buddhist Studies at Manchester University ; he taught there until 1970.

In 1970 he was pastor ( Vicar ) in Burwell in the county of Cambridgeshire . During that time he worked as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University . In 1975 he became archdeacon (head of a church parish) of Huntingdon ( Archdeacon of Huntingdon ) and pastor ( Vicar ) in Great Gidding in the county of Huntingdonshire . In 1977 he was briefly parish priest ( Rector ) in Hemingford Abbots in the county of Huntingdonshire. He became the Honorarkanoniker (Honorary Canon) of Ely Cathedral appointed.

Act as a bishop

In July 1977 he was named Bishop of Ripon . He was ordained a bishop on September 21, 1977. He was the youngest diocesan bishop in the Church of England for several years when he took office at the age of 46 . As Bishop of Ripon, Young was responsible for both the traditional parishes of the Yorkshire Dales and the multi-cultural parishes in the West Riding of Yorkshire that challenged the Church of England. He built up a close ecclesiastical connection between the Diocese of Ripon and the Church in Sri Lanka. He also contributed to the reconciliation between Tamils and Sinhalese through his episcopal activity . He devoted himself intensively to interreligious and interdenominational dialogue . He also worked closely with David Konstant , the Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds . From 1978 to 1986 he wr Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Organization Partnership for World Mission, a non-governmental association which representatives of various missionary societies brings together with the General Synod of the Church of England. He was from 1979 to 1988 also chairman ( chairman ) of the board of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge .

His episcopal interest was particularly in the subjects of upbringing and education .

David Young was a member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England. He advocated the ordination of women , but rejected the ordination of homosexual priests, as well as same-sex civil partnerships and same-sex marriages . In 1996, he dismissed the former gay retired Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, Derek Rawcliffe , as Assistant Bishop for presiding over a gay couple's wedding ceremony.

He retired in 1999 after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma . He was the last bishop of Ripon before the Diocese of Ripon was merged into the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds. He was succeeded as Bishop of Ripon and Leeds by John Richard Packer . In the New Year honors of 2000, Young was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire . He received the award "in recognition of his service to the Church of England and in the field of education".

Young also held numerous church offices. He was more than three years a member of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England, he led the Vorsitzbei the Archbishop of Canterbury's Inter-Faith Consultants was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Ecumenical Churches Joint Education Policy Committee from 1994 to 1999 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the influential Board of Education of the General Synod of the Church of England.

Membership in the House of Lords

Young was from 1984 until his retirement in 1997 as minister Lord member of the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address in May 1985. In the House of Lords, he spoke on numerous topics, particularly social issues.

Private

Young was married twice. In 1962 he married his first wife Rachel Lewis; she died in a car accident in 1966. The marriage resulted in two children, a son and a daughter. In 1967 he married Jane Havill for the second time; he had three sons with her.
