David and Goliath (original title: David e Golia ) is an Italian film adaptation of the Bible from 1960. The film, which received little criticism, opened in German cinemas on May 13 of this year.

action

In essence, the film follows the biblical story. It is set around 1,000 years before the birth of Christ. Samuel cursed the reigning, melancholy King Saul in front of the Israelites and prophesied that he would soon be replaced by a young man who had extraordinary abilities and was blessed with wisdom. At God's request, Samuel goes into the house where the shepherd David lives and secretly anoints him to the next king. The young man immediately feels the divine work within himself.

The whole people of Israel admire David because he only killed a bear and a lion with the strength of his hands. Thereupon he is called by King Saul as an advisor to his court, where he soon becomes friends with his son Jonathan and his sister Michal . This is devoted to the new courtier in love. When war broke out again between Israel and the Philistines , the Israelites grew desperate because the enemy had a huge fellow named Goliath in their ranks. He challenges Saul's warriors to battle and kills them all. Abner , the first minister in the state, calls on David to take up the fight against the giant himself. His secret wish is that David, whom he hated, should die.

When the two opponents face each other on the battlefield, David tries to appease the giant with words, which he initially succeeds in doing. But then the smaller one quickly draws his sword and puts it at his opponent's throat. He has no choice but to beg for mercy. Immediately David changes the way he fights: armed only with a sling , he faces Goliath. Suddenly a stone hits him on the temple and he sinks dead to the ground. David savored his triumph by cutting off the head of the dead with his sword. The Philistines are dismayed. Under David's leadership, the Israelites succeed in inflicting a crushing defeat on the enemy.

Saul appoints David as his new general. In addition to Michal, Saul's eldest daughter Ribecha, Abner's lover, is now attracted to the new hero. Therefore, Abner intensifies his efforts to make David bad in front of Saul, which he finally succeeds. But the more Saul feels that he is gradually losing his strength, the more his hatred of David grows. Ribecha, who has been rejected by him, seeks revenge and spreads bad rumors about the young man. While David is with Michal, Saul tries to pierce him with a lance. But David can avert the attack.

Before the council meeting Saul promises his general that he will shake hands with his youngest daughter if he should succeed in killing 100 Philistines. But he only wants to throw David into a life-threatening enterprise. With a few friends, David penetrates the Philistine camp and even kills 200 of them. Michal and David can now marry each other.

criticism

“The style of the film is based exclusively on the visually obvious battle and scenery painting. To the same extent that the bulge of ugly mammoth decorations is applied with obvious pleasure, the directors (...) lose control of the actors. "

“The story of David and Goliath in an Italian Bible film with a great show and entertainment note, hardly to be taken seriously and not without naive curiosities. So Saul is partly a grim villain, partly indecisive, decadent and without a trace of activity; then suddenly he saves David's life and gives him his daughter to wife. David, in turn, looks like a half-undressed American welfare child with a defiant air. "
