Dawson is a city and also the county seat of Terrell County in the US state of Georgia with 4540 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Dawson is about 30 km northwest of Albany and about 250 km south of Atlanta .
history
Dawson was founded in 1856 and named after William C. Dawson , a former Congressman and US Senator , and elevated to the status of city in 1857.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 4540 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 1662 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.68 people per household. There are a total of 1919 households.
68.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.28 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 39.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 25.3% of all households.
32.4% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 24.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 45.4% of the population were male and 54.6% were female.
18.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 78.3% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 1.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 2.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 27,535 USD , while 43.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
Attractions
The Dawson Historict District , the Dawson Woman's Clubhouse and the Terrell County Courthouse , built in Victorian style in 1892, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
The Chickasawhatchee Primitive Baptist Church is the oldest surviving church in Terrell County.

Dawson has three public schools, the Cooper Primary, Carver Elementary, and Terrell County Middle & High School . Furthermore, the Terrell Academy , a private high school founded in 1970, is in the city. The closest high schools are in the city of Albany: Darton College, Albany State University, and Albany Technical College.

Dawson is crossed by US Highway 82 and Georgia State Routes 32 , 45 , 50 and 118 . The nearest airport is the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport (around 40 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 300 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were four robberies, 27 assaults and 97 break-ins.
Personalities
Walter Washington , the first elected Mayor of Washington, DC , was born in Dawson on April 15, 1915. Other prominent sons of the city are the diplomat Lucius D. Battle and the musician Otis Redding , who posthumously became one of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s.
