The De Havilland DH.91 Albatross was a high-speed airliner for 22 passengers that was built at De Havilland in Hatfield ( Hertfordshire , England ) in the late 1930s . The machine was made entirely of wood, primarily cedar and balsa wood . This design enabled the DH.91 to have a takeoff mass of just 13,400 kg. It was powered by four 391 kW (532 hp) piston engines . The range was 1674 km at a cruising speed of 338 km / h.
The Albatross was a high point in wooden aircraft construction. The hull was made of plywood and balsa in a sandwich construction. This design was later used very successfully on the De Havilland DH.98 Mosquito . The wings and tail unit were also made of wood.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) took over two Albatross prototypes for service. These were destroyed in August 1941 and April 1942.
