Dean Melanson (born November 13, 1973 in Antigonish , Nova Scotia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who has spent a total of ten seasons in the American Hockey League and two in the National Hockey League . In Germany he played two seasons in the German Ice Hockey League for the Iserlohn Roosters and the Kassel Huskies .
Career
Dean Melanson began his career at the age of 17 with the Saint-Hyacinthe Lasers in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League . Immediately after his first season he was voted into the team of the best rookies . The defender stayed for two more years, during which he not only collected scorer points but also a large number of penalty minutes. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the fourth round in 80th place.
1993 Melanson was in the playoffs of the American Hockey League made his professional debut with the Rochester Americans . The right-shooter played on the Sabers farm team for the next three years . In the 1994/95 season he was also able to complete five games in the National Hockey League , as Buffalo had requested him due to numerous injuries in the NHL team from Rochester. In 1996 Melanson won the Calder Cup . The 1996/97 season he spent in the International Hockey League with the Quebec Rafales . From 1997 to 1999 Melansson was again active for the Rochester Americans. In the summer of 1999 he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent . They only use it in the farm team, the Philadelphia Phantoms . In March 2001, the Flyers traded Melanson for Matt Herr of the Washington Capitals . For the Capitals he was able to play a total of four games, mainly the defender was active in the AHL for the Portland Pirates . In December 2002 he was traded again, this time for Josef Boumedienne of the Ottawa Senators . These sent him to the Binghamton Senators in the AHL.
In 2003 he first played a few games in a lower league before the Iserlohn Roosters signed him in November 2003. Here he collected 150 penalty minutes in just 27 games. Melanson then moved to the Kassel Huskies in the German Ice Hockey League . For the 2005/06 season he moved back to North America and spent one and a half seasons in lower-class leagues. In January 2007 he moved back to Europe , this time in the Italian Serie A for HC Milano Vipers . The 2007/08 season he played in the Elite Ice Hockey League for the Basingstoke Bison . He then ended his professional career.
