Club career
Childhood, youth and career start in the USA
Demitrius Omphroy was born on May 30, 1989 as the son of the Panamanian Ric Omphroy of German origin, his father was Panamanian and his mother German, and the Filipina Beverly Tolentino in the Californian coastal city of Alameda. Like his parents, Omphroy grew up with his three years older brother and two years older sister in the United States and completed his schooling at the Venture School in San Ramon , a few kilometers further inland. In 2004 he was part of the adidas All-Star Team , which is elected every year by the United States Youth Soccer Association . In 2005, when he was still a youngster, he joined the youth department of the Portuguese top club Sporting Lisbon , to which it belonged up to and including 2007.
During his time at the Portuguese Football Academy, the young talent was initially diagnosed with visual disturbances and a feeling of numbness in the foot, followed by acute neck pain, which nullified a previously promised professional contract with the first division club . Instead, he was sent back to his homeland, where he was to be placed under medical treatment. In the same year, Omphroy, who had already played in various US junior national teams, finally began studying at the University of California, Berkeley, and appeared on the men's soccer team for the sports department there, the California Golden Bears .
Weak onset at the University of California, Berkeley
However, he had to look back on a weak freshman year when he did not play a single time from the start in a total of 13 appearances and only had two assists by the end of the game year, albeit with two game-winning goals. With the men's soccer team, which has existed since 1906 and has never won a national championship, he was the first to finish the Pacific-12 Conference after 1996 and 2006. In the ensuing NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship of 2007, he managed the team in the third group to the second round and was eliminated there almost against the team of Virginia Tech from the current tournament. In the following 2008 game, Demitrius Omphroy scored his first goal for the university soccer team in a game against the UCLA Bruins by converting a direct free kick.
By the end of the year, Omphroy, who was used alternately as a striker and midfielder, had made 19 of 21 possible appearances, with only one match from the start on the lawn and a record of three hits and one assist . With the election in the Pac-10-All-Academic-Honorable-Mention-Selection , he recorded an individual success for the first time. During the free time at university, he also took part in the United Soccer Leagues , especially the USL Premier Development League , in the San Francisco Seals team. Here he was used in ten championship games, where he himself remained goalless, but contributed one assist.
Under the former US international Kevin Grimes , he slowly but surely advanced from 2009 to become a regular around the team, which at that time consisted almost exclusively of later professionals. This year he started in 14 of his 18 championship appearances, scored one goal and prepared another three for his teammates. At the end of the game year, it was enough to be voted into the Pac-10-All-Academic-Honorable-Mention-Selection again . Also in 2009 was used for a club team in the free time; for the Bay Area Ambassadors in the National Premier Soccer League , he made 12 goalless championship games. Omphroy had his best performance of the season in his senior year, when he played in all 20 of his league appearances from the start, remained goalless himself, but contributed six assists. It was not until February of the same year that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after an MRI scan due to numbness in his feet and neck pain . In that year he was called up for the first time in the national football team of Panama ( U-21 ), for which he took part in a training camp.
With the team he then took part under Julio César Dely Valdés in the qualifying games for the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2010 . At the end of the season, nine Golden Bears players were elected to Pac-10 All-Academic Teams ; while Hector Jiménez , Davis Paul and Tony Salciccia were elected to the Pac-10-Second Team , with Steve Birnbaum , Servando Carrasco , John Fitzpatrick , Ted Jones, AJ Soares and Demitrius Omphroy there were six players in the Pac-10-All-Academic -Honorable-Mention-Selection of the Conference. In the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship , Omphroy came after regular time with the team to the Regional Finals of Group 3, where the team was only eliminated from the current tournament in extra time against the eventual champions, the University of Akron . The day after winning the Pac-10 Championship, coach Grimes and Omphroy were guests on the sports talk show Chronicle Live on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area .
Transfer to Toronto FC
At the beginning of December 2010, five California Golden Bears players were invited to the upcoming MLS Combine , including Omphroy, who was considered the versatile player during his four years at university, as well as the aforementioned Carrasco, Jiménez, Paul and Soares. About a month later, in January 2011, it was announced that these same five players would also be included in the MLS SuperDraft 2011 . In the second round, the 1.78 m tall all-rounder was drafted as the 26th pick for the MLS franchise Toronto FC and officially signed on March 16, 2011. At that time, nobody in the club knew about the previous illnesses of the player listed as a defender and also accepted for this reason. For the first time on the bench of the professional club he sat on June 25, 2011, at that time still unused, against Real Salt Lake . Just four days later he arrived at a 1: 0 home win against the Vancouver Whitecaps to a nearly one-minute short stint as he from the 89 minutes for just the Ecuadorian national team has become João Plata came on the lawn.
After that, until the end of the 2011 game year , he sat in three more games (July 10, August 27 and October 1) without being used on the bench. He was also a substitute on the bench in a 2011/12 CONCACAF Champions League game against the UNAM Pumas at the end of September 2011. Initially still in action as a right-back Demitrius Omphroy was used as a striker over time by head coach Aron Winter . On November 23, 2011, the franchise announced the premature departure of the versatile, multicultural soccer player.
Retired after a short time in the Philippines
After he let his career as a soccer player rest in the following months, he signed a contract for one season with the Philippine first division club Global FC in September 2012 . Shortly before that, Omphroy was called up for the first time in the senior national team of his mother's home country in August 2012 and in a friendly friendly match , after he had previously played in various national selections in his country of birth and in the U-21 national team from his father's home country used against the USL-PDL club Chicago Inferno . After he made it into the knockout round with the team as group winners of Group A , he scored the 1-0 lead in the quarter-finals against Kaya FC-Iloilo to later make it 2-1. Subsequently, after another narrow 2-1 win against Loyola Meralco Sparks , the team made it to the final, where the team lost 2-1 to Stallion FC . After not making it to a single league appearance for the team, he ended his contract early and returned to the United States at the end of the year.
