Dennis ( Original title: Dennis the Menace ) is a children's film from 1993 by director Nick Castle . The main actors are Walter Matthau and Mason Gamble . The characters are based on the US comic strip of the same name by Hank Ketcham , which first appeared in 1951.

action

5-year-old Dennis Mitchell lives in a house with his parents Henry and Alice. Dennis is a nuisance for his neighbor, Mr. Wilson. His wife, Mrs. Wilson, who loves children, is very open to the boy. Since Dennis is on vacation and his mother has also taken on part-time work in addition to his father, they try to find a babysitter for their son. However, this turns out to be very difficult, as Dennis always unintentionally, but regularly causes massive anger and thus drives his guardians to the edge of despair. When both parents have to travel on business and are looking for someone to supervise Dennis in their absence, they only get rejections from everywhere. Only the Wilsons from next door remain, and when the parents ask Mrs. Wilson, she actually agrees. However, Mr. Wilson is not at all enthusiastic about it and is of course the victim of numerous pranks and mishaps in the film. For example, paint ends up in Mr. Wilson's grilled food and when Dennis finds his teeth and accidentally breaks the two upper incisors out, he replaces them with chewing gum, with which Walter Matthau looks like a rabbit in the role of Mr. Wilson. When a burglar comes into town and steals a valuable collection of coins from Mr. Wilson, Dennis meets him a short time later. He drives the burglar insane with his chatter and behavior, whereupon he can convict him and hand him over to the police. In this way, the boy finally becomes a hero for Mr. Wilson, as he can return the stolen coins to him.

background

  • In Great Britain the title of the film was shortened to Dennis because it could have been confused with the well-known British comic strip Dennis the Menace and Gnasher . Coincidentally, in March 1951, two comic strips with identical names were invented in both the UK and the US. The English strip was published on March 7, 1951 under Dennis the Menace in Great Britain. The comic strip is still produced today. On March 12, 1951, the American comic Dennis the Menace , on the characters of which this film is based, was released.
  • The title of the poem that Martha Wilson recited to five-year-old Dennis to sleep is " Wynken, Blynken, and Nod ". It is an evening poem that many Americans have told their children to sleep for generations. The author of the poem is the American writer and poet Eugene Field . The poem has been used musically by many artists over the years. The two most common performers in Germany are probably Donovan and Roger Whittaker .
  • The filming of the film took place from August 3, 1992 to January 12, 1993 and was shot almost exclusively in Illinois . However, the team shot one scene in Oklahoma City .
  • The cost of production was $ 35 million. The film grossed around US $ 117 million in cinemas around the world, including around US $ 51 million in the United States.
  • It was released in the US on June 25, 1993, and was shown in German cinemas from July 8, 1993.
  • Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd were already in front of the camera in the films Back to the Future , Back to the Future 2 and 3 .

Reviews

"Child-friendly, but with little claim and care staged gag story, the only bright spot of which is Walter Matthau."

“ To deny the spiritual relationship between Dennis and his big brother ' Kevin ' would be to discuss the difference between Lassie and a Collie. The puns are of the same sandpit caliber, the slapstick is Macaulay-Culkin level. What 'Dennis' has ahead of 'Kevin' is the better cast. The Mason Gamble, selected from 20,000 applicants, proves to be a direct hit in its natural way. And Walter Matthau, as grumpy Mr. Wilson, is the ideal attack surface for rascal Dennis. The rather brutal 'jokes' that Sam (Christopher Lloyd) in particular has to endure are worrying. "
