Professional career

Dennis Gaubatz was selected by the Detroit Lions in the eighth round of the NFL Draft in 1963 as the 111th player. The Boston Patriots from the American Football League (AFL) also showed interest in Gaubatz and voted him 199th in the AFL draft in the 25th round. Gaubatz decided to accept the Lions' offer of contract. He was hoping for the Lions as a starter aground, as the careers of two-budgetary line backers of the Lions, Joe Schmidt and Carl Brettschneider , the end were inclined. In his first year of play, he was mainly used as a substitute player in the linebacker position, and he was also employed in the Lions' special teams . In 1964 he replaced Carl Brettschneider on the position of outside linebacker , before he had to replace the future member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Joe Schmidt due to his injury as a middle linebacker . Both game years were unsuccessful for the Lions, they could not qualify for the play-offs in 1963 or 1964 .

In addition to his football career, Gaubatz successfully studied industrial technology. In 1965 he successfully graduated and worked at Ford after the NFL season . This year, he was selected by Don Shula , the head coach of the Baltimore Colts, addressed the him a contract offer with an annual salary of 18,000 US dollars submitted. Gaubatz gave his consent, with the help of the Colts sold his house in Detroit and moved to Baltimore . The Colts were a top team in the NFL and only failed in the NFL final last year . Shula managed to integrate Gaubatz into his game system before the season. He managed to make friends with numerous Colts players, such as Johnny Unitas , Bobby Boyd and Bubba Smith . In his first year playing for the Colts, Gaubatz was responsible for announcing the defense moves. With his team he was able to win 10 of 14 games in the regular season in 1965 . In the subsequent divisional play-off game, however, the Colts failed at the Green Bay Packers with 10:13. Although the Colts were able to continue to establish themselves in the top of the league, they only managed to return to the play-offs in 1968. After 13 wins from 14 games, the Colts beat the Minnesota Vikings 24:14 in the divisional play-off game . In the NFL final Gaubatz was able to prevail with his team against Cleveland Browns 34-0. This victory meant for the Colts entry into the AFL-NFL World Championship Game , where they met the New York Jets . Gaubatz hit a sack in the game against Joe Namath , the Jets' quarterback . But he could not prevent the 7:16 defeat of his team in Super Bowl III .

The 1969 season was neither good for the Colts nor for Gaubatz. While the Colts lost their leading position in the NFL, Gaubatz injured his hand in the season and was replaced by Mike Curtis . Shula left the Colts after the season and Gaubatz asked to be handed over to the Washington Redskins , as he wanted to play for their coach Vince Lombardi . However, Lombardi died before the season and Gaubatz decided to end his playing career.
