Chill Factor ( Chill Factor ) is an American action movie by Hugh Johnson from the year 1999 .

action

A few years ago on an island in the middle of nowhere. Andrew Brynner , Colonel in the US Army , will report to the scientist Richard Long , who is in the process of testing a new warfare agent called " Elvis ". The experiment develops unexpected consequences: " Elvis " turns out to be a weapon of mass destruction to which Brynner's entire command falls victim. While Long gets away lightly but with a remorse because of his work, Brynner, as the responsible scapegoat, bears all the blame. He is dishonorably released and imprisoned in a detention center where he swears vengeance on Long.

Years later, the incident is almost forgotten. Long now works at a military research institute in Montana and in his free time goes fishing with the casual worker Tim Mason , who works in a local pub. Brynner has since been released, gathers a mercenary troop and ambushes Long in his laboratory. He wants to kill the doctor and steal all " Elvis " stocks in order to sell them on the black market to international terrorists . However, Long suspects the trap and runs away with the entire supply of " Elvis ", but is critically injured by Brynner.

In the meantime, the regular weekly ice cream delivery by the supplier Arlo has arrived in Mason's Café . There is immediate antipathy between the two, as both argue about the delivery modalities. Long bursts into this scene. Shortly before he dies, he hands his confidante Tim the " Elvis " container and explains the effects of the warfare agent. Should the chemical get warmer than 50 degrees Fahrenheit , " Elvis " would activate and develop its lethal effect. Mason has to promise Long to bring the warfare agent to Fort McGrudor Army Base .

Meanwhile, Brynner and his team have also arrived at the café. After Mason and Arlo are able to avoid this by means of a feint, Mason persuades Arlo against his will first with money and then with a revolver to work together. Mason wants to get “ Elvis ” safely to the fort in Arlo's freezer truck . Although the escape succeeds, Brynner soon realizes that he has been glued and sets out to pursue the unequal duo. Mason and Arlos have to defend themselves against attacks from Brynner's people while traveling on partly bumpy roads through a mountain landscape. It also becomes clear why Arlo has concerns: he stole the refrigerated truck from his boss because he was exploiting it for work.

After the gangsters manage to stop the truck, the two men flee in a boat. Army representative Colonel Leo Vitelli has now also followed on the heels of Mason and Arlo and is tracking them down near a dam . But Brynner got ahead of him and kidnapped Arlo. His demand to Mason: " Elvis " against Arlo. Tim makes a pretense of entering into the deal, but is captured himself upon delivery. The military around Vitelli withdraw in the face of Brynner's threat to use " Elvis ". He exposes Mason and Arlo to a sample of the weapon in order to present his criminal customers with a demonstration at their auction for the warfare agent. But Mason again has an ace up his sleeve: The " Elvis " container handed over to Brynner only contains a harmless gel, Mason still has the real chemical and sets off with it and Arlo in a transporter after both have freed themselves.

With the active support of the Army in the form of Vitelli, both get into a road tunnel with the warfare agent , Brynner and his task force are stopped before they reach the tube. In the tunnel, however, Mason and Arlo are stopped by a policeman who thinks they are both murder suspects. With the burning wreckage of Brynner's cars and the melting cooling, “ Elvis ” is getting hotter and hotter; Vitteli has no choice but to seal the tunnel. After blowing up one entrance, he stops the destruction of the other driveway at the last second when Mason and Arlo still find a place to cool. Together they can get the trapped people out through an air shaft. But Brynner survived the attack and confronts Mason. A fight ensues in which Arlo intervenes to help and both Brynner are able to overpower. They drag themselves outside and the army seals the tunnel airtight. Brynner is trapped while " Elvis " passes the critical 50-degree mark and detonates. The Colonel is killed by the chemical he was chasing after.

Vitelli thanks Mason and Arlo, but says that due to the confidentiality of the case, they should not expect any reward or mention in the media. The two protagonists, who have become friends in the meantime, place themselves in the hands of two paramedics, to whom they tell their heroic story.

Reviews

  • Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times of September 1, 1999 that the actor indeed " gifted " ( " capable were"), would play but poorly developed characters. The technical side is " virtuoso ", although the film was just another " orgy of destruction " ( " demolition derby ").
  • The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was " stereotypical " and that its plot was merely a " pretext ".

background

  • The film was shot in South Carolina and Utah at $ 34 million production costs , but grossed only about $ 11.2 million.
  • The exterior shots of Mason's cafe were shot in Liberty , a small town in South Carolina. The restaurant is actually a timber shop, the hotel shown is actually a laundromat.
  • After the first " Elvis " explosion, Doctor Long said: " I am become death, the destroyer of the world ". These are the same words that Robert Oppenheimer after the detonation of Hiroshima - nuclear bomb has said.
