Arn - Der Kreuzritter (Original title: Arn - Tempelriddaren ) is a historical film from 2007, which was made as a co-production by Sweden , Finland , Norway , Great Britain , Germany and Denmark .

action

Arn Magnusson grew up in an influential Swedish family in Västergötland in the 12th century . On the basis of a vow from his parents, he was brought up in a Cistercian monastery and learned not only to read and write, but also to fight. He falls in love with the beautiful Cecilia Algotsdotter, who becomes pregnant by him. However, due to personal and political intrigues, the two are separated.

Arn is sent to the Holy Land as a crusader . In Jerusalem , Arn rises to a respected man and leads, among other things, peace negotiations with Saladin , while Cecilia in Sweden is locked in a monastery where she waits for her lover.

background

Arn - The Crusader is the first part of the film adaptation of the Götaland trilogy by the Swedish author Jan Guillou and includes the plot of the first two volumes. In Sweden, where the books already had cult status, the film enjoyed a lot of attention with local stars like Mikael Nyqvist and Stellan Skarsgård in supporting roles. In Germany, however, it was only published on the DVD market.

criticism

The lexicon of international film described the film as a “visually stunning medieval spectacle”. The production is "prepared as a carefully equipped chivalric romance". The staging is much more interested in “character drawings” than “in action and monumental battle panoramas”.

continuation

The further plot of the novel trilogy, in which Arn returns to Sweden, was filmed in 2008 under the title Arn - Riket vid vägens slut .
