Life

Derviş Hızarcı grew up in Berlin-Neukölln , the son of a Turkish guest worker family who immigrated to Berlin from Yozgat in 1969 . He has two siblings; his older brother Abdullah-Akin Hızarcı has been a board member of the Berlin Bar Association since 2015 . After studying to be a teacher in Berlin and Magdeburg and his legal clerkship in Berlin-Lichtenberg , he became a teacher at the Carl Von Ossietzky Community School in Berlin-Kreuzberg . From 2011 to 2015 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Turkish community in Berlin, where he promoted the dialogue with the Jewish community in Berlin and the then chairman Lala Süsskind and later Gideon Joffe . From 2008 to 2011 he worked in the education department at the Jewish Museum Berlin . Through his work there he developed a broad knowledge of German-Jewish history and Judaism. In 2011 he got to know the Kreuzberger Initiative gegen Antisemitismus (KIgA) association and has been chairman of the board since 2015. During his tenure, the association grew from a small neighborhood initiative to a nationally and internationally respected institution in the fight against anti-Semitism . In addition to the Anne Frank Center and the competence center of the Central Welfare Office for Jews in Germany , the KIgA is a key player in the field of political education in Germany.

In addition to his work at the KIgA, Derviş Hızarcı was also in close cooperation with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Berlin under the direction of Deidre Berger. From 2013 to 2016 he was co-coordinator of the Turkish-Jewish Roundtable held there and a member of the anti-Semitism task force of the AJC Berlin. From 2017 to 2018 Hızarcı was a member of the working group against anti-Semitism of the Berlin State Secretary for Civic Engagement, Sawsan Chebli , together with Deidre Berger, Sigmount Königsberg (anti-Semitism commissioner of the Berlin Jewish community ) and the Green politician Sergey Lagodinsky . In addition, Derviş Hızarcı was a member of an international expert group on anti-Semitism of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe . He was instrumental in the development of a guide for political decision-makers on educational work against anti-Semitism.

In 2014, Hızarcı founded the non-profit company empati with Chaban Salih and Hakan Tosuner, the managing directors of Avicenna-Studienwerk . This is best known for organizing the annual competition for class speaker of the year in Berlin. Interreligious dialogue is also a focus of his work at empati: in 2015 he carried out a pilot run of the DialoWG project, in which Muslims and Jews live together in a shared apartment. The empati also carried out studies for the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs , which were included in the German Bundestag's 2nd anti-Semitism report.

Derviş Hızarcı was invited as a guest of honor to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC .

Time and again, Hızarcı takes a stand in daily political media through interviews and articles, for example in the Jüdische Allgemeine , the taz , Neues Deutschland , the Tagesspiegel , the Süddeutsche Zeitung and others.

Since August 2019 Derviş Hızarcı has been the anti-discrimination officer of the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family. In addition, since July 2019 he has been a member of the advisory group of the Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life in Germany and the Fight against Anti-Semitism , Felix Klein . Since 2018, Derviş Hızarcı has also been a member of the board of the Federal Working Group on Religious Extremism (BAG RelEx e.V.).
