The Federal Republic of Germany recognized Moldovan independence on December 14, 1991. The two states have had diplomatic relations since April 30, 1992.

Germany maintains an embassy in Chișinău . The Republic of Moldova has an embassy in Berlin and a consulate general in Frankfurt am Main . An honorary consul is in Hamburg .

From 1814 to 1940, so-called Bessarabian Germans lived on the territory of today's Ukraine and Moldova.

Guido Westerwelle was the first German Foreign Minister to visit Moldova in June 2010. The Federal Chancellor paid Moldova the first visit of a German head of government on August 22, 2012 and met the Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat in Chișinău .
